Recent announcements by the Ontario Major Junior League and the Western Hockey League that they are throwing away the traditional hockey uniform in favour of the brand new Cooperall outfit is bound to have an effect on just how all hockey players will be dressed in the future. You may recall that a year or so ago the Winnipeg Jets wore this new uniform during training camp and apparently were quite satisfied with its performance. As yet the new style uniform has not been of- ficially adopted by the N.H.L. but with the two above leagues having given it their blessing it is only a matter of time until the big league follows. By the end of November all teams in both leagues will be outfitted with the new Cooperall outfits. The new gear is produced by Cooper Canada Ltd. and is 20 per cent lighter than equipment now in use. The research and design has been going on for almost five years and the end result should provide a better protective piece of equipment. Besides being lighter it is tougher, cooler and should be more comfortable on the player. The outfit consists of a stream-lined pair of waist-to-ankle © warm-up type pants which eliminate the need for stockings. Under the outer shell is.an inner girdle, stretching from above the knee to the ribcage, somewhat liké a pair of football pants. The girdle is made of lightweight material with plastafoam pads in strategically-placed pockets for protection from in- juries by sticks or skates. When worn this equipment will give the appearance of a one piece suit which in turn will resemble , space-age technology. : 'Although Cooper is the first on the market I shouldn't think C.C.M..is far behind and it won't be long before this type of equipment is the rule rather than the exception. : I understand it will cost about $500 to outfit one player, which is quite expensive when you consider that the skates and helmet are extra. I am told that Cooper is providing all teams in the major O.H.A., including Ottawa 67's, with this equip- ment free of charge in an effort to get their foot in the door so to speak. Once the product is accepted at this level and that is only a matter of time, then obviously it is the start of bigger and better things for Cooper in the future. You can rest assured it is not Cooper's intention to supply equipment to every youngster playing hockey in Canada free of charge. E. A.
