Page 6 Meditorial By Rev. Jim Paul The dome of the cathedral of Florence, designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, has a very unique feature according to the June, 1980 issue of Our Daily Bread. A small opening was left in it, positioned in such a way that a shaft of sunlight can stream through it only on June 21. At just the right spot on the floor of the sanctuary is a brass plate, and if the rays should fail to cover it completely, there would be cause for con- cern. The divergence of the light in any direction would indicate that the structure had shifted its center of gravity, and steps would have to be taken to correct the problem. Brunelleschi, knowing that the cathedral had been constructed on marshy ground, devised this unique method to detect if the great church begins to shift. An interesting spiritual parallel to this story is that every christian church, whether big or small, rich or poor, is equipped with a built-in barometer that indicates any shift away from God's standard. I'm not referring to the brick and mortar building in which the worship of God takes place, but rather, the gathered people of God. This is the real Church of Jesus Christ. The barometer of which I speak is the Bible -- God's revealed will to man. Within its sixty six books there shines the pure light of God's standard for every assembly of believers. Take a moment and compare the spiritual state of many churches to- day in the light of God's Word and you will see how far we have shifted in the quicksand of disobedience. A group of churches in Canada have just recently turned a blind-eye to the spiritual commands of sexual purity, by condoning some extra-marital relationships. We have fallen far short of our Creator's Will. Yet, is this any more serious than chur- ches that bind the Word of God with the chains of tradition? How it must hurt God's heart each week to hear preachers who seldom call men to repent and receive Christ as Saviour or, to see people that attend church on Sunday and_live like the devil and other six days of the week. With respect to the pure light of Divine Truth, many congregations are adrift in a sea of insability. Let's get back to the Bible and the faith of our fathers. The ukase, awful in its finality, was received this week from the bylaw officer of Russell Township, an engaging official who appeared almost as perturbed as we by the dreadful grinding of the wheels of of- ficialdom. Daphne, it will be recalled, is a sheep which my wife, Shirley, and I acquired when we went picking strawberries at Patterson's. Peo- ple have acquired many things strawberry picking. Usually a sheep is not one of them. I may have recounted this before. It will bear repeating. For sheer poetry, it is hard to surpass. At Patterson's enjoying a coffee between spasms of berry picking, we encountered Nancy Matthew, proprietor of 70 bounding sheep. The transaction was completed in a trice and we emerged proud possessors of Daphne. While Daphne has never won a prize, simply because she hasn't been entered, her grandmother carried off a first recently at the Russell Fair. I will say frankly that my own view of Daphne has always tended to envision her turning slowly ona spit. My wife who is incurably sentimental toward all living, fur or wool-covered creatures (which lets me out) sees it differently. She has made a pet of Daphne and feeds her Maple Leaf cookies. The company is free to use this in their commercials. The become incurably addicted and paws (if that is the word) at Shirley's leg if cookies are not for- thcoming. She also tries to get in the back door. This shows the fol- ly of making pets of dumb animals. It also shows they are not so dumb. Daphne also does regular turns on the Fitness Trail. With Shirley at the other end of the rope, Daphne will cover the whole trail in about 18 minutes. This, then, is the gentle, unassuming creature which an un- thinking municipality would have us dispense with. One must ask oneself: What is Daphne's crime? At a time when freedoms are disappearing all over the world, surely the inalienable right to keep a sheep should not be lightly in- terfered with. Since she is located in the middle of three acres, it is hard to see who she can be annoy- ing, if anyone. Are we not getting carried away with this feverish insistence on making the village as much like ' the city as possible? Surely the last right to be surrendered by free people is the right to keep the gen- tle creatures of the woods and fields about them. The strength of Scotland was its sheep. Now, ap- parently, it is illegal to have one about. Scanning the bylaw, there is nothing about sheep, nothing about animals. What particular reference in the bylaw is the bylaw officer about to enforce? The bylaw speaks about the use of dwellings. Daphne is not in con- travention, as far as I am aware. We do not keep the animal in the house. There is a barn on the pro- perty. Quite often, these summer mor- nings, I am awakened with the dis- tant crowing of a rooster. Is there any better or healthier way to wake up, than at the summoning of nature's alarm clock? Occa- sionally I hear the moo of a cow. This does not fill me with pent up, insenate rage, a desire to crush these animals out of existence. Are we to extirpate every vestige of natural life from the surroun-. dings? Somewhere in the confines of the village, we suspect there may be outlaw chickens.
