New R.A. Board of Directors The Russell Recreation Associa- tion held its Annual General membership meeting on November 20th at the Dr. F. Kin- naird Community Centre. With only about 24 people in atten- dance the meeting moved along quite quickly and everyone was on their way home shortly after 9 p.m. The minutes of last year's ' general membership meeting was approved and a copy of the treasurer's report submitted for discussion. Outgoing Chairman Jack haters reviews the ac- complishments of the R.A. during the past year including the in- troduction of new programs and briefly touched on what may be required to put the swimming pool in operation next year. He stated that as much as $40,000 may be required for a new pool building and repairs to the filtering system. Without these repairs the pool will probably not be permitted to Operate next season. Hopefully a share of the cost could be recovered from available grants. The meeting ended with the elec- tion of the 1980 Board of Direc- tors. While the goalies were disap- pointed with their performances, the fans were the winners as Russell slipped past Glencairn 10-9 in South Carleton In- termediate Hockey at Glencairn on Dec. 6. The teams were deadlocked at 1-1 after 20 minutes of play as Bob Woods scored for Russell and Brian McCullough replied for Glencairn with his first of two goals. Nine goals were scored during the middle frame. Chris Ray scored his 20th of the season to put Russell into the lead. Roger McNabb and Dave Bassett then scored to vault Glencairn into a . shortlived 3-2 lead. Russell retaliated with five straight goals, two by Randy Blondin, and one each from Dan Chamberlain, Dave Lee and Loyal Hughes before Greg Pearce scored for Glencairn to narrow the gap to 7-4. : Russell's Randy Blondin lengthened the lead to four goals in the third period. Three straight goals by Glencairn reduced the lead to 8-7. Loyal. Hughes and Chris Ray made it 10-7. Glencairn scored two late goals but it was too little too late as Russell finished out on top 10-9. Only seven penalties were called during the game, two of them to Russell. Next game for the Raiders is Friday Dec. 14 at 8:00 p.m. when Russell entertains Stittsville. --G@FTIDERS Now Available Our new catalogue is brimming with helpful gift ideas on every page. However, the best team prevailed. The exciting Alberta team deserved to win. Edmonton has the best two-quarter- back system in the country. When Tom Wilkinson couldn't move the team, coach Hugh Campbell didn't even hesitate to _pull Wilkie for Warren Moon. And he shone. He threw the winnng strike to Tom Scott. It wasn't their best effort by any stretch of the imagination. Two potential scoring drives were snuffed out early in the game. The score should have been much higher. Montreal killed itself with costly penalties. Gerry Datilio clipped Edmonton's Pete Lavorato resulting in a 90-yard punt return touchdown being called back late in the game. Montreal could very well have won the game if it were not for needless penalties. I guess that pays back for all the penalties the referees missed on the Als this season and last, especially on punt returns. 2 hee hee oie 2 ae oe ae oe ae ie The CFL has finally done something to improve the gate at football games. It's too bad we have to wait until 1981 for the new schedule to take effect. The CFL will have a fully in- terlocking schedule, something I have wanted for a few years now. Each team in the league will play every other team twice, once at home and once on the road. The fans (especially in the East) are tired of seeing the same teams in their division three or four times each regular season. The Ottawa Rough Riders played Montreal six times this year. No wonder why the Eastern final was a defensive struggle! Old rivalries might suffer a little but better one's will develop. I can't wait to see those Western clubs come to Ottawa. The games will be so exciting! Fan support will increase across the nation. KKK KR KK RK RK Just nothing is predictable these days in the NHL. Some teams are surprising while others are disappointing. Buffalo is doing quite well this season and their new-found success after a few years of hardship can be attributed only to their coach Scotty Bowman and assistant Roger Neilson. Buf- falo leads its division by five points. Vancouver is leading the Smythe Division and is playing exceptional hockey. Two of their recent victories came over the Islanders and the Cana- diens. The four new NHL clubs are drawing very well at the gate but only Hartford is near the .500 average. It was great to see former Boston coach Don "Grapes" Cherry walk into Beantown with his Colorado Rockies and dump the Bruins. One of the highlights was when Cherry call- ed a timeout in the final minute of the game and signed autographs for the fans. It was nice to see that at least the Bruin fans appreciated what he did in his five-year stint in Boston. ; The biggest amazement has been the play of the Philadelphia Flyers. The Flyers have abandoned their "tough guy" image and have stuck to playing hockey. They are on the verge of breaking the Montreal Canadiens record of 28 games without a loss. No doubt they will win the Patrick Division. They are already leading the division by 16 points. Disappoint- ments this year include the slumping New York Islanders who are wallowing in fourth place. With basically the same team as last year, the New Yorkers have already lost 12 games. Last year they only lost 15 games the whole season. Look for a shakeup in the ranks of the Islanders. Meanwhile the Cana- diens aren't burning up the league. They are having problems with weaker teams in the league. No doubt the loss of Scott Bowman, Jacques Lemaire and Ken Dryden has hurt the Habs . chances of winning their fifth straight Stanley Cup.
