Cons. Barre, who regularly patrols Russell Village, will be the only representative of the Casselman OPP detachment on ' duty at the kiosk. In addition to answering ques- tions about policing in general, Cons. Barre and other officers will be trying to raise money for the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario. "'We'll have cameras on hand and we'll charge a small fee to take pictures of kids sitting on a police motorcycle," Cons. Barre explained. "The money will be . turned over to the hospital." The constable, one of 14 sta- tioned at Casselman, described the picture-taking project as the policemen's way of recognizing International Year of the Child. His involvement in the kiosk will be good experience for Cons. Barre in his new capacity as com- munity services officer for Russell and Cambridge townships. He begins the job in September on a part-time basis. His duties will involve lecturing to school children on such perti- nént questions as bicycle safety. He'll also outline to students details of the Block Parent Plan now picking up momentum in Russell Village. Cons. Barre has been screening Block Parent applicants . and has so. far processed about 40 names. All have been cleared to par- ticipate in the program, he said. Russell Village is the first com- munity in the Casselman detach- ment's jurisdiction to set up such a program. It has already proven its worth on one occasion. "A couple of kids walking on the street were harassed by a motorist. They went to a home displaying the Block Parent sign and police were called." He plans to screen a film depic- ting the program sometime this fall. As part of his new job, Cons. Barre will make himself available to readers of the Castor Review to answer any questions on the policeman's role. His comments will be published in future issues.
