Oh, and I'm sorry I deliberated and questioned your sincerity."' Isn't it amazing the weight some words carry. O'Heare Open. Sounds plain enough but it's the significance of those words and the spirited rivalry they have given rise to, that makes those of us who receive invitations to the annual golfing event chortle with delight. For those who may not have heard of the tournament (raise not thine voices lest though feelest like complete fools) it all started six years ago when Harry, Mo and Ken (sound familiar?) the O'Heare broth- ers, decided that the area needed a sporting event to rival the weekend television network sports productions. So they fired out invitations to a very select few advising them to present themselves at the Larrimac Golf Peter Van Dusen O'Heare Open in class by itself Club just north of Hull on or about the specified date in what was then the nineteen hundredth and seventy second year of our lord. From that day, the O'Heare Open has become an annual sports event unparallelled in modern history. (I failed his- tory). The Open as it is so fondly called is purely a family venture but if you have enough money to bribe either one of the dons, Don Harry, Don Mo or Don Ken, you can enter the contest. They will even ice your mother in law if you finish in the top 5. This is only my second year as a competitor in the big O. H. but Harry tells me its all on the up and up, always has been. All you have to do is go down the list of past winners: Ken O'Heare, Mo O'Heare, Harry O'Heare, Burke O'Heare, Brian O'Heare. Burke tells me it's not fixed . . . it just costs less to get the trophy bulk engraved. This years' winners . . we had a tie . . were Bob Hogan and Gordie Matthieu. Bob tells me its the second time he has been written up in the paper: The first story read . . "'Bob Hogan soon to be married to Eileen the daughter of Harry and Mickey O'Heare of Aylmer." Gordie, an RCMP officer, occasionally dis- played his contempt at never having been chosen winner even though he finished with the lowest score every year. The O'Heare used the Atlantic Hand- icap System . . where you use a Newfie for a Caddie. The rest of us finished any- where we wanted to. For most of us that meant the 19th hole back at Harry's place in Aylmer. There were O'Heares from Niagara Falls (Harry's daugh- ter Ruth and husband Rick) as well as distant O'Hearians from bit TO who came all the way down to play the tourney. There were women in the Open this year, a first, but it's okay they finished well down the list. Ruth O'Heare ahead of Eileen O'Heare. Don't ask where this duffer finished . . . but for next year's tourney I'll be calling myself Peter O'Heare. Until next time and many thanks to tourney organizers. If YOU'VE GOT THE CLUBS. . . What do you do when an old friend leaves you his golf clubs when he passes away. Well naturally you build a golf course. That's what Alf Welch did and is still doing. Pictured above Alf is standing where the 8th tee will be after construction on the course is completed. 9 holes of the Metcalfe Golf Course are already in use and the other 9 will be completed in the next 3 years. Figure Skating The time is approaching when our avid skaters will don their skates for another season. This year promises to be a very good one for the Russell Figure Skating Club. Cindy Cameron, former member of the _ Ice Capades show, will be teaching many of the skaters and Steven Epps will coach Power Skating which has been added to the program for the first time. We look forward to seeing last seasons skaters and meeting new skaters. Registration in the Russell FSC will take place Oct. 2 and 4, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the arena. Area player fares well Once again a local athlete has come through and the Castor area has been placed on the map by one of its proud citizens. Young Mike Fleming was invited to the Ottawa 67's training camp this season; an honor few athletes can lay claim to. Last year Mike was drafted by the Toronto Marlies also of the OHA but finished the season with the Nepean Raiders of the Central Junior A League. Mike survived the early cuts with the 67's but is unsure of his status for the rest of the season. He played all his minor hockey in Metcalfe and even as a young- ster starred in minor league contests. No matter where he plays this year the talents of Mike Fleming will be deeply appreciated by his team mates and his coaches.
