Gary Barnes -- Law behind the paint cans You can get pretty well anything you need in Loral's Home Hardware; a gallon of paint, a pound of nails, legal advice... Legal advice? That's right, because Loral's is equipped with its own part-time law office. It's only a temporary arrange- ment. When Ottawa lawyer Gary Barnes decided earlier this year to set up a branch office in Russell, he discovered one of the village's major shortcomings - a lack of suitable space. Until he can track down something more _ permanent, Gary has been loaned a desk and a bit of floor space by Loral owner Ted Lehowski and that's where he conducts business every Monday and Thursday. And the arrangement has its advantages; if Ted is busy with a customer, Gary will answer the phone and Ted takes messages when the young lawyer isn't available. Gary, who has been practicing for about 18 months and has two partners, enjoys visiting Russell and would someday like to establish a full-time satellite office in the village. He hopes his wife Suzanne and himself will eventually be able to move to the area from their Gloucester Town- ship condominium. While working out of Loral's was slow at first, things are picking up and now Gary says: "I always have something to do." Recently, he represented Don Rogers in the sale of the village grocery store to Jack Tyo. Why did Gary pick Russell? When he first started coming to the county registry office to research deeds, he was delighted at the competence and helpful- ness of Wendell Stanley and his staff. He liked what he described as the village's friendly atmos- phere and was surprised there was no law office. He decided to fill the void. Admitting it takes a while to get started, Gary noted that Embrun lawyer Jim Baribault has a thriving practice; he hopes to be as successful. meeting July 11th. which will take place August 7th. details next issue. There was a large turnout of members, as an important issue was to be discussed and voted on. Following the submission of estimates by Jack James, it was decided that the Society could not at present afford to construct the proposed large showing area. Plans for the showing area were shelved for future consideration. In place of the larger building, a much smaller stabling and show area has been planned. Barry McVey outlined the format of this year's opening performance, a Carol Baker show, and an improved children's show. Construction of a fence, Tile Drainage for the Fair Grounds, and improvement of the electri- cal wiring were other topics discussed at the meeting. Any individuals interested in assisting the Agricultural Society in their endeavour to construct a large showing area in the future are welcome to contact the President. > make jobs. Best Watermelon To select the best watermelon, choose a ripe, juicy one - go for the best looking one in the stack. Choose one that is well formed and avoid melons that are misshapen or have pointed ends. The shape is likely to affect the taste. Check the side of the melon that lays on the ground - it should be a creamy yellow or white.
