ANSWER: Dogs need dental care particularly as they get older. The most common problems encountered are dental tartar and gum inflammations. Your dog's teeth should be checked regularly when it is brought to your veterinarian for booster vaccinations. Early preventive medicine such as this will save your pet extensive dental work (pain, teeth loss and expense). Dental calculus or tartar is seen in older dogs or young dogs that eat only soft foods. A deposit of calcium salts, food debris, and bacteria builds up on the teeth. It is orange or brownish in color and quickly hardens. These deposits start to dig into the dog's gums which start to recede causing an inflammation. Without treatment, the teeth eventually loosen and fall out. It appears that dogs that chew bones, dry food or dog biscuits daily have less buildup of tartar. In the early stages, there may be no obvious signs of the disease. With advanced cases, the dog may stop eating because of pain, tongue irritation and infection. Also the mouth odor will be unpleasant. If the buildup is not too severe and the dog is manageable, the veterinarian may remove the deposit without sedating the animal. In order to do a thorough job, it is often necessary to anest- hetize the animal. The deposit can be easily removed, teeth scaled and cleaned. Ultrasonic dental equipment is being used in many veterinary clinics today.
