Page 2 Thursday, October 28, 1976 | SPORTS Skate-A-Thon On October 16th, Russell Minor Hockey Association, in their efforts to raise funds for the hockey season just beginn- ing, held an adult Skate-A-Thon at the new arena. Little did we know what to expect, but be hoped for the best. By ten o'clock that night, Dale Carscad- den, our treasurer, had arrived at a total of almost $3,800.00 in pledges receivable, with almost all skaters having completed their 100 laps of the rink. We would like to express our deepest thanks to all those who took part in our fund raising venture and made it the success it was. Special mention should go to people such as Ann Lee Carscadden and Carol Boothe, without whom Dale could not have kept up with the mass of forms and tabulations, to Rhita Harrison who organized the lunch at the party afterwards, to Barry McVey for the use of his stereo. equipment and _ skating music, to all those minor hockey parents who made _ sandwiches and to those who donated merchandise for prizes. Prizes were donated by the following: MacIntosh Sales -- Chrysler; Fulton's Appliances -- Chester- ville; Universal Appliances -- Ottawa; Chrysler Home Hard- ware -- Chrysler; Radio Shack -- Metcalfe; Laplante Motors -- Casselman; O. Maheu -- Em- brun; Geggie's Hardware -- Winchester; Doug Cherry; Hugh Latimer. 2 Then there are the skaters themselves. How can we possib- ly express our feelings of appreciation towards those people. The spirit of the skaters we saw out there that night was typically the spirit of this community we live in. Let it never be said that the people of Russell don't go all out for worthwhile community purpos- es. The very nature of this community was again demon- strated in this endeavour. There were several people who went far above and beyond even Russell Community spirit. People like Richard Hamelin who outdid even Richard Hame- lin with his efforts, and Dorothy Gleason who never even consid- ered quitting (obviously never heard the word). We understand that Marilyn Sullivan didn't fall once with her new _ skates, although Marion Cochrane said she had to hold Marilyn up a lot. Don Coates finished his 100 laps but complained a lot about everybody passing him. We also understand that Gary Patterson and Bob Clark got mixed up in their counts and did 150 laps each. Hugh (legs) Latimer said he would have finished earlier but had to help Marilyn. Also Pat McLaren' would have been on the dance floor earlier but she had to wait for Jack and help Marilyn. Ivan Wyman could have skated all night but kept running into John Hayward who was trying to stay away from Marilyn just in case. Again, thank you one and all. The Russell Minor Hockey Assoc. News A lot of action has happened at OTHS during the last couple of weeks. The teachers would take on the winner of a grade 9 homerooms' tug-of-war contest. When all of that was decided, the teachers opponents would be 9-G. They battled out the teachers easily to win the trophy. There also was a_ teacher- student football game which was won by the teachers 12 -- 6 on the strength of touchdowns scored by Mce the "Tow" Racine and vice-principal Mr. Duboyce. Mr. Duboyce caught the winner with about 10 minutes left. Willy Vandintillart got the students only major on a 65-yard pass and run play on the first play from scrimmage. The teachers defence then tightened up and secured them with the win. In sports, the Junior Girls' Basketball team made the "A"' Division 4 out of their first 6 games. OTHS dumped Cairaine Wilson 29-14, Colonel By squeak- ed by Osgoode 15-13 in a close game, OTHS beat Gloucester 22-18, and we crushed Cairine Wilson 30-9. Senior Girls Basketball saw Osgoode lose six of their last seven games. The Gloucester Gaters beat Osgoode 46-36, OTHS beat Garneau 53-33, Colonel By squeaked by us 39-36. In other action, the Gaters crushed OTHS 76-41. Garneau went on revenge and haunted OTHS by scoring with about 9 seconds left to pull out a 37-35 win, while South Carleton beat Osgoode 40-27 and Woodsworth dumped us 60-38 in our latest encounter. Our soccer team is. still winless after 5 starts. Gloucest- er, who is regarded as one of the best teams showed it by dumping OTHS 6-0, Garneau scored a late goal and beat Osgoode 1-0. Other games saw Osgoode lose 3-1 to Merivale. Randy Vaillancourt scored our only goal. Russell Review Rec.
