Horticultural Society We are planning another busy year in our Horticultural Society hoping for a good membership. Canvassing for members will soon be done. With a membership fee of $1.00 and a gift of 8 red petunias to be given when you pay the fee at Mrs. Chas. Hitsman's on May 29th. You will receive at that time a program for the year and a membership card. Mr. Dubois of the Tree service and Nursery of Clarence Creek advised us he will have a truck load of started vegetable and flower plants for sale at the time you pick up the petunias. Mr. Dubois who planted the lilac trees in 1975, donated by the society for public planting, will replace the trees this spring as he was not able to give them the promised care last year. June 11th will be the horticultural Queen Contest in the United Church Hall with dinner in the dining hall from 6 p.m. -- 7:30 p.m. $2.00 per plate. To enter the contest an essay of 500 words -- subject -- How to beautify our village for grades 7 & 8 in both local schools, open to any pupil. The three best essays judged at each school by teachers of that school will be the competitors. Each competitor is asked to give a 2 minute impromptu speech, judging to be on speech, dignity and poise. Dress: simple long dress. Judges will be 3 uninterested persons. Queen to read her essay. She will be crowned by the 1975 queen and the princesses by the 1975 princesses. The Queen is asked to attend Horticultural Functions. The trophy will be presented to her at that time. We wish to say a_ special "Thank you"? to our Municipal Council for their donation of $250.00, also thanks to all who have donated prizes for the annual flower show, August 21st in the Curling Club. Those wishing to present these gifts will be welcome to do so on the evening of the show and happy to have you with us. Please let us know. Judges for the flower show are Mr. and Mrs. Claude Macdonald of the Ottawa Horticultural Society. We plan on having the Annual Trillium award for the village and hope to have a similar judging for the Country. Anyone wishing a country viewing please advise us that your name may be entered. Sept. 17th is the pot luck supper and competition, a 10' table arrangement for Thanksgiving. Open to adults, teenagers and juniors, separate classes and prizes. Dec. 3rd. Annual Christmas Meeting with a competition of Christmas Mantle arrangement with prizes for Adults, teenagers and juniors. Separate classes. We wish you the very best in your 1976 effort in horticulture. Pres. Bertha Smith, 445-2965, Secy. Maida Robinson, 445-2073. In his role as philosopher-king, Mr. Trudeau has been telling us about a new society, whether related to his "just Society" we're not sure, with a new set of values, standards and goals. We'll be a conserver society instead of a consumer society, sharers rather than hoarders. The lion, apparently is to lie down with the lamb and Sasha shall lead\them. Now, any thinking person has to agree that we must change our ways and the sooner the better. Our natural resources, petrole- um, iron ore, nickel, copper, are being depleted at a rate guaranteed to improverish our grandchildren. Our farmland is being paved over. Our waterways are polluted, our industries are killing us. Our economic order, based on greed and brute force, is bound to collapse. Democracy is dying and society disoriented. Yes, Mr. Trudeau, we do need long-term economic planning, a no-nonsense energy policy, a science policy, resource manage- ment and stable political connect- ions. But, Mr. Trudeau, I'm not sure you're the man for the job. Let's look at the record. In 1974 you railed against wage and price controls; in 1975 you imposed them. You established a Foreign Takeover Review Board but it has no teeth. You promised to end regional disparity, that you've done. Now the whole country's in an economic mess, not just the East. You boasted years ago that you'd wrestled inflation to the ground. You'd better review your judo holds, sir, the rascal got up again! Several times you've promised to slash government spending. What about your great export drive? Business papers are telling us that manufacturers are exporting despite your government's ineptitude, not because of its assistance. Our foreign affairs are an international joke and were it not for the personal qualities of the Canadian soldier, our military posture would hilarious. You've reduced Parliament to an audience and €levated the P.M.O. to an executive branch of government so strong your ministers worry. You sell nuclear reactors to every banana republic and band of henchmen who can get a loan. We're not surprised at your muddling through the Mackenzie Wednesday, May 5, 1976 Page 5 Editorial -- Into The Promised Land Pipeline or your pathetic gyra- tions in the Petrocan project. You're saving a few dollars by cutting back the National Research Council while our research and development re- cord is already one of the worst in the western world. We won't mention these messy little political situations your govern- ment seems to be floundering in. It is fair, though, to point out that several respected economic forecast groups have become frankly worried about Canada's future. They see us going the way of Great (?) Britain. And you, Mr. Trudeau, have been in charge around here for nearly a decade. Change will come and must come, but under our present leadership I have to be pessimistic. That's not partisan; that's realism.
