NEWS The week of February 9, 1976, was Carnival Week at Osgoode High. Monday was Greaser Day. The guys had their hair slicked back while the girls had pony tails and skirts. This reminded me of the program 'Happy Days". We had a dance featuring 'Percy and the Teardrops'. I hope you all had a good time. Tuesday was Sadie Hawkins day and Wednesday there was no school. Thursday was gangster-- day and Friday there was a hockey game. The _ Students bombed the teachers 7-1. The teachers never had a chance. The students opened with two quick goals to lead 2-0. Then the students scored two more goals before the end of the first period to lead 4-1. In the second they scored one goal to lead 3-1 and in the third period the students closed out with two goals to win 7-1. To close out the carnival there was a dance featuring "Phoenix". In the Model Parliament, the Canadian Peoples' Party won the elction with 41 percent, the Fascist Party had 32 percent and the Progressive Anarchist Party ended up with 27 percent. The Osgoode Township High School Concert Band will be playing at the Metcalfe Winter Carnival. The variety night will feature the Jazz Ensemble. Also the band will be going to Brighton on April ist, 2nd and 3rd as a band exchange with the East Northumberland Secondary School Band. As a special event, the band will be going to see the Toronto Science Centre. Both groups have also taped for the CJOH program '"'New Faces". Watch for them! SPORTS The Junior Girls Volleyball started their game against South Carleton right and ended it right. It went right down to the wire. Osgoode won it 15-11, 15-11, 6-15, 14-16 and 15-13. The girls played a very good game except for a couple of lapses. They had big leads such as 10-2 and then lost but anyway they won and that is the only thing that counts. In their game against Garneau, they played a very good and strong game but lost. In Senior Girls' Volleyball games, they lost both of their last games to South Carleton, 3 games to 1 and lost to Garneau three straight by scores of 16-14, 15-13, 15-6. The Junior Boys' Basketball Team is struggling again this year. They lost to Carine Wilson 36-29. OTHS is struggling in last place with no wins and Carine Wilson has two wins. Pete Hendricks had seven points. In other games Earl of March beat Osgoode 54-22. Tom Racine had 14 points. On Friday the 13th, OTHS had no luck and was bombed by Woodsworth 58-17. Pete Hend- ricks had 8 points. On the 16th Pete Hendricks had 16 points in a losing effort to Colonel By. The final score was 48-40. In Senior Boys' Basketball Merivale bombed Osgoode 69-23. In other games, Sir Robert Borden beat OTHS 60-46. Scott Herr had 8 points. They lost another close game to Colonel By 63-46, OTHS lost 79-27 to Pius, Gloucester, Gayters beat OTHS 60-30 and Garneau doubled Osgoode 70-35. Garneau again beat Osgoode 57-35. Many other Russellites helped in a lot of capacities and their part was appreciated. We did not under estimate the quality of the chili-con-carne we served. It was very good. He crosses the blue line, winds up and falls flat on his pride. But that's all right because it is all in a night's work for one of the Russell Oldtimers. Every Thursday night from 8:30 until 10:30, 60 of Russell's finest and not so finest, hockey players of yesteryear take to their blades for 120 minutes of thrills, chills and feats of daring and wonder. (It's a wonder someone isn't killed). For the first few games we had to turn people away at the door because there just wasn't enough seats. But lately we have played before crowds of 3 or 4 becasue the fans think they are not getting their money's worth -- (no charge at the door). Upon hearing some of the complaints a few of our smarter hockey people have decided to liven up the game. We now are able to change lines without falling down; we can shoot the puck without holding onto the boards and the most exciting innovation to our game is that the goalies can now change ends between periods in 2 minutes and 37 seconds flat. But this Oldtimers hockey is not all fun you know. Every player risks life and limb every time he skates onto the ice. But rest assured, fans, that Dr. Kinnaird is always on hand to patch the wounded and give sound advice -- "Is you OHIP paid up?" On Valentine's Day the Russell Oldtimers held an evening of skating, card playing and dancing. We raised in the neighbourhood of $900.00 and we hope to use this money to install a sound system in the arena. I would like to take this opportu- nity to thank the residents of Russell and surrounding area for coming out and helping us have a fun-filled and prosperous eve- ning. And to the organizers I say "Thanks, and let's do it again, real soon."' On this note I'll close with the famous words of that often quoted author "Anon" who says "Happiness is -- being able to lift your leg into your pants the morning after an Oldtimers Hockey game.
