SEE POSTERS AROUND TOWN FOR FULL DETAILS Water under the bridge We seem to have touched off a friendly argument around Rus- sell by going to this tabloid format. Some folks say that it isn't as "homey" or warm as the 'passion pink'? was. Probably right. We want to keep this paper like the community -- friendly, warm and involved. Help us to! Before we get too far into this new year I want to thank five people without whose dedication and hard work this paper would never get out. They are, alpha- betically, Esther Butler, Joyce O'Reilley, Kate Pelot, Suzanne Schroeter and Leila Twiname. A tip of the community hat to all of them! Dianne Berube, who also wrote an article for us, phones us to give the names in the back row of the '"'way back when" hockey picture. They are W. Lowrie, R. Stearns, E. Bryan, C. Smirle, A. Fitzpatrick and A. Mucklestone. Incidentally, the picture was taken in 1912 on the steps of the Commercial House. In a crass effort to build our want-ad section, we'll run any non-commercial ad up to twenty- five words FREE next issue. No catch, just phone us. Whether or not you realize it, there is a study underway that will have a major impact on our community. Essentially the pur- pose of the study is a re-structuring of Prescott- Russell. Do we stay as we are? Do we form two (or more) separate counties? Should Rus- sell Township join Ottawa-Carle- ton? This study is official and its recommendations will in all likelihood be implemented. There is something to be said for looking west. Our roads are lousy, we don't carry a bit of weight in Hawkesbury where all the power seems to lie. But then, are we prepared to pay Ottawa-Carleton's higher taxes? Would we have any more power when stacked up against Ottawa, Nepean, March and Gloucester? I doubt it. Some people never come out and say it, but there is also a feeling that we, a poor little anglo-phone village, are being robbed by a horde of bad guys of the other official tongue; that we're some kind of a rural Westmount surrounded on every side by, well, you know... . them! Well, for heaven's sake! Let's hope there's one little community in this great land of ours that has the common sense, courage and decency to leave language out of a purely economic and political discussion. So we (the anglos) are a 20 percent minority. So? Personally I like it. I'm sitting where I can thumb my nose at Rene Levesque and Jack Horner. Want to see real, live Canadi- anism? Come to Russell Town- ship. So much for that sermon. There is a question. It involves roads, taxes, schools, services, bylaws -- money issues, quality-of-life issues. What do you want? Where do you stand? Sewers are coming to Russell. Know what that means? Among other things, maybe the trout will come back to the Castor! Swimming Pool is full of snow now, but will it be full of water this summer? Maybe you're the person who can answer that. Thanks to Peter Romme for undertaking farm news for us.
