DOORS CLOSED—Schreiber's YMCA building has been closed after almost 60 years of operation —Photo by Inez McCuaig Schreiber March 1966 YMCA Building Closed By Inez McCuaig The closing of Schreiber YMCA marks the end of the oldest social organization in the town — the ladies bowling league — which first began play at the Y building in 1909. Two former bowlers in the well-known club are Mrs. George Moore and Mrs. Emit O'Connor, now both of Fort William, In earlier years the YMCA was more of a community centre, with a boys' club, adult sing songs and other varied activities. But in more recent years, it has been just a hotel with a three-lane bowling alley. Built in 1908. the YMCA has an unusual history. One character connected with the Y once rode his horse into the lobby of the building. The same man each night filled his coal pail for his house from the one beside the fireplace in the YMCA. On one occasion he bitterly reviled the management for using lumps of coal too big to fit into his home heater. The Y and its annex have been sold although the new owner has not been announced. However, it is believed the old building will be razed *to accommodate a new commercial enterprise.
