Heritage Tid Bits It was due to the persistent and caring efforts of J.E. Walker, that as early as 1888, interest was shown in the education for our community. In July of that year, Mr. Walker wrote to the Minister of Education asking for the proper steps to take to collect school taxes. Money had been collected by subscriptions and now Mr. Walker wanted to know how to assess the property in the usual way and levy a tax The property they were interested in belonged to the C.P.R. The first Public School was in a bunkhouse in which a resident engineer held an office. In 1902, the C.P.R, school grew too small for the town's growing population. The town had been incorporated for only one year, and the Board decided to build a four room school house. In 1903, the move was made into the new school, nine years later two rooms were added and the entrance was enlarged. While construction was going on, the classes were held in the arena, the town hall and the Methodist Church. With the number of students growing and the basic grades finished by the first students, Mr. Evans, principal and teacher since 1891 felt the need for a continuation school, which was added on to the Public School and opened in 1924. Built in 1902, the Schreiber Public School consisted of only four rooms. With growing enrolment, additions were made, and in 1924, a continuation (high school) was added on (seen on far right).
