Hungry Bears Invade Town Young Marksman Kills One Schreiber, July 3 (Special). — Hungry bears have invaded the streets of this town and one of the boldest marauders has been shot and killed. Lean from lack of food, the animals were seen on village streets on four successive nights. They have caused considerable excitement, entering buildings and stealing food, ruining lawns and gardens, and causing confusion among dogs in the village. At least one dog has been mauled by the intruders. One bear was spotted by several persons in the early evening near the Canadian Pacific Railway subway, while a mother and her cub were observed sleeping near the Bank of Montreal, A 300-pound black bear was eventually shot at close range by Jack Handel Jr. He used a heavy Winchester automatic rifle. Handel and his brother, Earl, sleeping in a tent on their father's property, were disturbed by the howling dogs three nights in a row. On the fourth night the boys sat in a car with the rifle, waiting for a chance to kill. Finally, at 12:10 a.m., their dog set up a howl, and, joined by their father, Jack Handel Sr., they headed for a ravine and creek on the property. They spotted the bear coming up an incline fifteen feet in front of them. The animal spotted them at the same time but as he turned to escape, Jack Jr. fired and broke the animal's neck with the first shot. He fired two more shots for good measure. The trophy has been hung up for all to see and has proved a great attraction to tourists.
