SCHREIBER Legion Honors Paid John Handel As Funeral Held News-Chronicle Correspondence SCHREIBER, Jan. 17.—The funeral of John Handel, 57, town councillor here and veteran of the First Great War, who died Tuesday, was held Friday afternoon from the family home to Schreiber United Church. Rev. A. Lavender conducted service. The hymns, Nearer My God To Thee and Rest For Evermore, were sung. Mrs. W. Black was organist. The funeral was under auspices of Schreiber branch of the Canadian Legion led by E. G. Caccamo, past president. The Legionnaires assembled at- the Memorial Hall and marched to the Handel home. Led by a guard of honor of Veterans T. Bolan, T. Bryant, T. Wilson, G. Gan-on, E. Perry and G. Spadoni, the flag-darped casket was carried from the home. Burial was in Schreiber Cemetery, where Legionnaire Caccamo conduct-i ed the Legion burial service. Each member dropped a poppy in the grave. Last Post and Reveille were ! sounded by Bugler D. Gilaland as the flag was lowered and raised. Pallbearers were H. Stewart, P, J. LeBlanc, Basil Tremblay, Reg Bailey, O. Laine and W. Welbourne. Surviving Mr. Handel are two sons, two daughters and six grandchildren. | Sons are Jack and Earl of Schreiber. Daughters ar,e Margaret, Mrs. J. Spillane, Schreiber, and Adeline, Mrs. R. H. Sheedy, Fort William, The grandchildren are: Linda Handel; Edith and Douglas Spillane; Elaine, Geraldine and Patricia Sheedy. Mr. Handel's stepmother and .brothers and sisters reside in Winnipeg. His wife, the former Edith Robinson, died in 1933. John Handel was born June 12, 1891, at Winnipeg. He went to Schreiber at the age of 21 to work | for the Canadian Pacific Railway. After a three-year employment, he enlisted in the 94th Battalion in 1915 and went overseas. Wounded in the famous Canadian Battle of Vimy, he lost his right arm. After the war he returned to Schreiber and despite the loss of an arm was able to discharge capably his duties of municipal constable for 22 years. Staunch member of the Schreiber Legion, he was the branch president in 1934 and 1935. It was mainly through his initiative and efforts that Schreiber obtained the Legion recreation hall. He was also a member of the I.O.O.F., Lodge 402. Mr. Handel was elected to the i Schreiber Council in 1948 and had | been re-elected for 1949.
