Congregation planning busy year to celebrate church's centennial continued from page 1 on Sundays to minister to his flock. As an early teenager myself I remember the many trials and tribulations of trying to have the church heated with the old wood stove. There was a long string of stove popes running from the front of the church to the back of the church. That's where Alex McConnell did a fine job keeping the fires burning. In 1972 Cora Robertson canvassed the community for funds to paint the church and make some renovations. I will always remember the first turkey supper held to raise funds in the church sanctuary. The pews were lined up and down the sides of the church, tables fitted in, and the turkey carved on the pulpit -no running water - no flush toilets. On October 16, 1963 the first Otter Lake United Church Women's Group was formed. Rev. and Mrs. Ray Anderson showed us the 'guiding light.' Bertha Clare was president and Clara Baker was secretary treasurer. In February 1974, $763.00 was set aside in a special account for building or repairs. In order to satisfy the needs and desires a Ways and Means Committee was formed. Many walk-a-thons, flea markets, quilts being quilted, cement blocks being sold for $1.00 each and many more fund raisers were put into action. Lois Harris (Brook) turned the sod for the starting of the new church hall in July 1981. During the past 12 years money has been raised and spent our new church hall. Many donations of time and money have been greatly appreciated by the present congregation. Clara Badger holds the trowel used to lay the cornerstone of what is now Otter Lake United Church. 100 years ago the trowel was given to a member of the first congregation, after many years it is now back in Otter Lake United Church Our present church services are being conducted by Rev. Paul Morrow and Rev. Elmer Shaw. At Otter Lake the service starts at 9:45 a.m. with Sunday School included. It's been a Sunday tradition to have a luncheon and refreshments served after the service. Sandy and Edith Jacklin have been a great inspiration, not only for the delicious food, but also for the great variety of craft work that they contribute to the church. Please keep in mind our big 100th celebration on May 23 with Rev. Jackie Harper. There will be many announcements in the coming events column so keep you posted for our centennial celebrations.
