Gertrude Little, daughter of Henry & Mary Jane, and her older sisters were born in Leslie Township, district of South Pontiac, Quebec across the Ottawa River from Renfrew, Ont. and north of Shawville and Campbell's Bay, Quebec. About 1871 the whole Little clan, Henry's parents, William & Jane (West) and all their children except Tom who had died, moved from Quebec to the Parry Sound area; most settled around McKellar on Hwy 124, but Henry located lot 138 on the west side of the Parry Sound Road (now the James Bay Junction Rd.) Foley Township and built a house there which still stands and is home to cousin George Smith at present. A great deal of tragedy befell this family. At the end of July 1877, diptheria claimed the lives of Emily Little, 14 years and her only brother, Ernest, 4 years. Henry had just buried these children, when he too died of diptheria. Three weeks later Mary Jane gave birth to another daughter, named Henrietta after her father. Mary Jane had 5 sisters and 4 brothers, all of whom had moved to Cheboygan, Michigan likely about 1870, with the exception of her sister, Elizabeth Clarke who moved with the Littles to Foley where she met and married William McRoberts. Eldest sister, Hannah Clarke and her husband Frank Brannack took baby Etta and raised her in Cheboygan, Michigan, as their daughter; they didn't have any children of their own. Meanwhile Mary Jane was struggling to support her family. Daughter Ida at 12 years began working as a servant in a private home.
