Dr. Frank Hamill Source Information Professionals and Hospital File: Friends, Former Patients fondly recall Dr. Frank Hamill • Almost 70 years of service to Blind River • Died in Meaford, Ontario in the hospital on Nov 7th 1993 days before his 98th birthday • Born and raised in Meaford • Father was a dentist • Moved back to Meaford in 1991 • Came to Blind River in 1923 • Graduate of the University of Toronto's Medical School • Went to work in Dr Robb's practice that had a contract with McFadden-Malloy • Medical officer of health from 1948-1968 • Without pay immunized all school children from Massey to Dayton • Worked three years doctoring in the bush north of Wawa in the 20's; 2 years in Ottawa in the 30's • Married Alice Shepley in 1938 • Had one adopted son Robert; killed in a traffic accident in 1977 • Forced to slow down in 1966 due to a heart problem • Continued assisting and doing consultations for obstetrics until 1975 • Visited patients regularly and attended meetings when he could • 1983 he became the first recipient of the Dr William Hutchings Award for Distinguished Service in Health Care in Algoma • involved with St. Andrew's United Church, Striker Board of Education, The Library Board, The Horticultural Society, the Masonic Lodge, and the Cancer Society • Life is outlined in a book by Barrie Davey • Inspired lasting admiration • Worked long hours • Travelled from Spanish to Sowerby by horse and buggy or sleigh
