Description
This is a black and white photo of the Dyment Lumber Co. Mill at the south end of Main Street in Thessalon.

The mill is shown in the background with various railway tracks leading into it. The employees are standing and sitting for what appears to be a posed photo. One gentleman toward the right of the frame appears to be either an owner or one of the managers as he is dressed in a suit and bowler hat.

This photo appears to have been exposed backwards, as the image is flipped left to right.
Notes
Nathaniel Dyment first arrived in Thessalon in 1871 coming from Barrie, Ontario. He proceeded to purchase 300 acres on the east side of the Thessalon River toward the far end of what is now Main Street. The Mill was constructed in 1876. Mr. Dyment also owned a store, a boardinghouse and a warehouse on the lakefront.

The mill produced approximately 40,000 board feet per day and operated until 1888 when a fire originating in the boiler room destroyed the mill.

Mr. Dyment issued instructions to rebuild a new and even larger mill immediately, with the new mill being completed within months when production began again.

Mill operations were taken over by his son Albert Dyment in 1892 who continued operations in Thessalon until it was sold to the Thessalon Lumber Co. in 1906. Business continued in Thessalon until 1907 when the mill was dismantled and moved to MacBeth Bay in Nesterville.
