This is a wrought iron "hay knife" or hay knife with two handles, one for the right hand at the rear end of the blade and one for the left hand some inches forward and at the side of the blade. Sometimes referred to as a Lightning Hay Knife.

This type of knife was used by farmers to cut through an outdoor hay pile or mow in order to get at cleaner untouched hay on the inside. It took a great deal of strength to use it.
