Martin Russel's saw-mill started operations at the Falls in 1883. It was run by a water-wheel and had four upright saws. The Anglican Church of St. Mary Magdalene mentioned by Mrs. Howey as being finished in I883 had. been erected a year or so before through the efforts of Rev. Foster Bliss while the parish was a mission of Mattawa. In 1883 a frame building was erected on William St. west of Holditch to serve as a Public School and Protestant Chapel. Union Sunday School services were held there led by Mr. John Parker. Missionary work was done by Mr. John Ellis. In I884 a Roman Catholic Chapel-school was started by Father Côté at Front and Church Streets. This burned down in 1836. About 1888 the first. Methodist Church was built on Holditch St. The first ordained minister was a Rev. Smith. This building was later sold to the Orange Lodge. In 1891 Abbé Ferron became the first cure of the Roman Catholic parish and he had a log church erected on the west bank of the river. This was demolished in 1893, and the next year a new frame church and Presbytery were built on John St. The Presbyterians built a church at 202 Holditch St. about 1893. In 1906 wings were added and a Mr. Barber was asked to return the cupola as Mr. J. D. Cockburn was donating a bell. After the Union with the Methodists in 1917 (the first such union in Ontario) the church was sold to a men's club and was soon after burned down in a grass fire. The bell is now in the United Church.
