It was decided that second half fees will be due January 21 with deadline February 3. Inquiries have been made concerning the purpose of the club's saving account. It was explained that at the time it was started, money would be used for emergencies or in case artificial ice was installed, and fees had to be raised substantially. A motion was carried that a small amount of first aid supplies be purchased and kept in the locker. Date for the skating carnival has been set for February 18 at 2 p.m. Theme this year will be Disneyland. Conveners appointed were Betty Markewich, Main Street saloon; Rosalee Belanger and Edie Tompkins, surrey ride; Sally Leskinen, Swiss; Veronica Somerleigh and Nora Peters, frontiersland; Vera Mannila and Anita Lange, Alice; Edna Lathem Peter Pan; and Dorothy Salo, tomorrow. A small charge will be collected for the show, pre-school children will be allowed in free. It was moved that a door prize be purchased. Dorothy Salo and Anita Lange will make tickets and Elsie Baxter will look after sales. Joyce Hyde is in charge of posters. Anita Lange will run off programs. Nipigon 10 '1 '68 Curlers Ready For Play-offs By GLENA CLEARWATER Entering the Ladies District Curling Play - offs in Port Arthur on January 21 to 24 as representatives of zone three, will be a rink from Nipigon consisting of Sandy Kompon, Aila Ruoho, Jean Dahl and Janice Johnson. The event is the Northwestern Ontario play - offs with the winner going to the Ontario finals. Mr. and Mrs. K. Dampier and their five children motored to Vancouver for the holiday for a two week visit with relatives. Miss Madonna Martin was home on leave from Cornwall recently. She is now stationed at Camp Borden. Mr. and Mrs. L. Remenda and family have motored to Toronto for a brief holiday. Nipigon 31 '1 '68 Art Jalkanen Named Chairman By GLENA CLEARWATER Inaugural meeting of the Nipigon Hydro Commission was held recently in the board room of the Hydro offices. Art Jalkanen was appointed chairman. John Zechner, newly elected commissioner, took the declaration of office as a commissioner. The prayer of institution was given by Rev. R. Inshaw. The auditors report for 1967 was accepted and showed a sound financial operation for the year. Nipigon Hydro Commission agreed to provide prizes for a local elementary public speaking contest and also contribute prizes for the area contest. The contest is co - sponsored by the Ontario School Trustees and Municipal Councillors and Ontario Hydro. A joint meeting will be held in Nipigon on Feb. 5 between Ontario Hydro officials and the Nipigon Hydro Commission to discuss and plan various aspects for the 1968 operation. Nipigon Cubs Welcomed To Scout Troop By GLENA CLEARWATER Cubs of the Nipigon Black Panther pack attended the meeting of First Nipigon Boy Scout troop recently. A "going-up" ceremony was held. Leaving cubs were Ronnie Salo and Martti Huotari. Both were given the Grand Howl by cubs as they departed. Akela Mrs. Huotari introdduced the boys to Scout Master M. McDonaugh and were later welcomed by patrol leaders Ross Lillies and Danny Whent. As a scout welcome, the two cubs were made to run the "gauntlet" amid laughs and good natured slaps. District Commissioner M. Tomes was guest at the meeting and spoke to the scouts following the ceremonies. Investiture was held in the Black Panther pack recently. New cubs are Randy Koski, Mark Baxter, Alan Hurd, Gregory Sly and Dean Pelletier. Photo by Glena Clearwater THE FORT WILLIAM TIMES-JOURNAL, TUESDAY, JANUARY 16, 1968 Nipigon Reeve Predicts 1968 Busy Year By GLENA CLEARWATER Nipigon council held its inaugural meeting recently with new councillors being sworn in by clerk Frank Wheeler. Father F. Meyer gave the prayer. A welcome was given new members and a vote of thanks to Roy Taisey and Oscar Kaustinen, out - going members, who filled in for 1967 when two members were forced to resign because of job and illness. Reeve I. Mutch, re-elected for his second term, said that Nipigon was faced with problems created by the closing of the plywood mill, but could forsee another busy year. He added that there does not seem any doubt taxes will go down, there is hope they will remain the same. New councillors Ivor Hubbard and Edward Nyman were welcomed. Councillor Leskinen expressed feelings that if some independent thinking and use of common sense was applied to situations, council would be able to work in close harmony. Because the reeve will be working out-of-town for some weeks, council meetings will be held on alternate Friday evenings starting at 7:30 p.m.
