Agnes Macphail Country
(by Donna J. Mann)
Agnes Macphail would not have had much pity for a group of supporters who stood in deep snow by the newly erected Macphail signs on the edge of Ceylon in -9 C temperatures and a wind chill factor of -15. She was a woman who knew if there was a job to do, you just made the best of the situation and did it. She knew Grey county climate as well as anybody, confronting all kinds of weather walking to public school as a child and campaigning for her beloved political party as an adult.
The Grey County road signs, at Six Corners, on the east side of Ceylon on County Road #4 and County Road #9, east of Hopeville, welcome the traveller into Agnes Macphail Country: First Woman Elected to Canada's Parliament. Donna Mann, local initiator of the signage project. hopes the signs will remind people of the life, work and witness of a great leader.
Agnes left a legacy of integrity and faithfulness shown in a visible passion for issues such as equality, pensions for seniors and workers rights among many. She was a strong voice for rural issues, an advocate for penal reform, later founding the Elizabeth Fry Society of Canada out of her concern for women in the criminal justice system.
Further plans to mark Agnes Macphail's birthplace with a cairn on the corner of Southgate sideroad #7 and Grey County Road will be completed in the late spring with a day of celebration. Donna Mann read the prayer from a Holdfast program before lunch and invited everyone to sign a placemat to mark the occasion. A web site will soon present local pictures, articles and links.
