Elected For S.-E. Grey
Returns Came in By The Radio Route Through W. A. Hawken and Down & Sons Machines
Canada's only woman member of parliament will again occupy her seat at the Dominion Parliament at Ottawa during the sessions conducted by the next government. Miss Agnes C. Macphail was re-elected member in this, South-East Grey, constituency, by a substantial majority over Dr. Lewis Campbell of Markdale, Conservative candidate.
A big crowd was in town on election night and received the returns by way of the radio route, Mr. W. A. Hawken receiving them at his store and H. Down & Sons using the town hall, which was well filled, the returns coming in fine. The Bell Telephone Company, at their local office, handled the local returns very satisfactorily, through the manager, Mrs. Munshaw.
Ceylon's famous woman politician took her victory calmly. She had campaigned faithfully and was confident from the first that she would be re-elected on her Progressive ticket. Miss MaccPhail's [sic] majority is the largest of any in the district. In 1921 she defeated the Conservative and Liberal candidates in South East Grey quite easily, obtaining a plurality vote of 210 over them both. That election she was given a vote of 6,972 and her total on Thursday was 6,468. Dr. Campbell made a strong bid for his election in the towns and villages in his constituency, defeating his rival at nearly all of these polls. Markdale, his hometown gave him a majority of 231 and the other centres were in his favour also, but the country and the farmer vote were all for Miss McPhail. She reaped large gains in most of the townships which were enough to insure her election Following are the results:
