The Call of Waterloo College and Seminary REV. J. REBLE President of Canada Synod The President of the Canada Synod Presents an Appeal To the Pastors of the Canada Synod. Dear Brethren in the Ministry: The following resolutions show sufficiently that the Canada Synod fully realizes the grave financial situation of Waterloo Seninary and College, and the Laymen desire to learn more about the importance of the college for the development of Lutheranism in Canada: (a) "That Reformation Sunday be set aside as a day on which special offerings shall be gathered for our institution at Waterloo." (b) "That envelopes and pamphlets for this purpose be sent out to all congregations." (c) "That our pastors individually make an intensive study of the aims and objects of the college, and the advantages to the Church as a whole of giving higher education to our Lutheran youth in a Christian Lutheran college, so that they will be able to present them convincingly to their congregations, and that they do so occasionally." The time is here to act and follow the instructions of Synod. But because the times are hard many of us will hesitate to do it. Yet it must be done! Therefore, without exception, every pastor will prove himself loyal and faithful. Not only announce it, but present it, on at least two Sundays, with earnestness and yet in love. Kindly appoint a committee or committees to place pamphlets and envelopes in each home. Brethren! let us pray over it, and once we have prayed over it we shall go forth and do it in the strength of the Lord without trembling and fear. Yours in the Ministry, J. R. To the Members in the Churches of the Canada Synod. Dear Fellow-Lutherans: If you did not read the above letter to the pastors I ask you to do so before you proceed. It will help you to understand the importance of this pamphlet. And then keep in mind the above quoted resolutions of your Synod. I ask the praying members in our churches to pray for the courage and strength of the Lord upon their pastors. I ask everyone who sees and feels the great importance of our Seminary and College to speak about it and encourage others. I ask all those who do not understand why their Synod developed and enlarged Waterloo College not only to read but study this pamphlet and lend a willing ear to their pastors. I ask all members of every church to act diligently and support our Seminary and College with a true special gift! I charge the Church council members of our churches to prove themselves worthy of the high calling and be true "Aarons and Hurs" to their respective pastors Because most of the congregations never paid towards the apportionment as they ought to pay, the treasurer of the Synod could not even for one year forward the full amount to the treasurer of the Board of Governors. This, and only this, forced the Seminary Board to borrow money from the bank year after year. We owe the bank $8,000.00 on a note and have an overdraft at the bank of $6,656.46. Synod adopted a budget of $25,000.00 for our Seminary and College. But according to the present rate the Seminary Board will get only $1,800.00 which means $7,000.00 less than we absolutely need. We dare not, we cannot add $7,000.00 to the present overdraft. I trust you realize that the situation is grave but not hopeless. "We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not destroyed." God will move you. And we know that when our people are told in an honest way they will not forget nor forsake that institution which is essential for the future of the Lutheran Church in Canada! Hamilton, Ont. Oct. 1, 1931. Yours in His Service, J. H. REBLE, President. REV. E. HOFFMAN, D.D. First President of our Seminary FACTS TO REMEMBER 1. It is the only Lutheran College in Canada whose courses lead directly to the B.A. degree, and through which postgraduate seminary students may obtain the B.D. degree. 3. The entire standard of education for the Lutheran ministry in Canada has been placed on a higher plane because of the existence of Waterloo College.
