Steinway Concert Grand Gift of the Alumni The alumni of Waterloo Lutheran University are unique in university circles: they added new dimension to alma mater support by backing up financial contributions with a creative concern for cultural affairs on campus and in the Twin City community. Their first step was to present WLU on October 30, 1964, with a Steinway Concert Grand Piano, the first privately owned Steinway in Ontario's Golden Triangle. To celebrate the event, the Alumni Association brought to the WLU Theatre-Auditorium a premiere performance of the world-famed Israeli pianist, Daniel Barenboim. The artistic success of this concert encouraged the alumni to lend the Steinway piano for the spring 1965 concert of the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Orchestra featuring the talented Ruth Henderson, pianists, at the Lyric Theatre. The Steinway Grand was played again by Mrs. Henderson in a recent recital for the WLU Women's Auxiliary, and by Prof. Walter Kemp in a recital for parents, students, and friends on Library Dedication Day. In a different mood, "Steinie" appeared at the 1965 Purple & Gold show "Guys & Dolls" and has been booked for the February 1966 P & G show "Gypsy". Ayrton Kipp, a past president of the alumni, is chairman of the Alumni Presentation Concert Series. Alumni Loyalty fund Alumni ventures into cultural and scientific affairs are made possible by the annual Alumni Loyalty Funds. The first annual fund, launches in 1964-65 for 411,500, was an over-the-top success and provided means to present the Steinway Concert Grand Piano, scholarships, and academic award medals to WLU. The second annual fund, now reaching its climax, aims to raise $17,500 to sponsor the Alumni Foyer in the new library, scholarships, and academic award medals. Alumni President Tom Freure and ALF chairman Bev Hayes will present a cheque to Dr. William J. Villaume, University President, during the concert intermission tonight with Wm. McLeod and Tim Rat, presidents of the classes of 1964 and 1965 respectively, participating. The alumni executive will recommend, this Homecoming Weekend, that the third annual Alumni Loyalty Fund commence at once with an objective of $18,340 to sponsor scholarships, medals, and the telescopic dome planned for the top of the proposed Science and Business Administration Building. All contributions are appreciated. Alumni Associations of Waterloo Lutheran University 75 University Avenue West, Waterloo Ontario (519)744-8141
