My dear Bezeau:
How very kind of you to send me the box of delicious russet pears which arrived a few days ago! I hesitate to count the years since the first of similar gifts was received from you.
Your expressions of friendship all along the way were one of the real pleasures of my public life. I need scarcely say that this expression of your abiding friendship is, if possible, the more deeply valued now that I am living in retirement.
I hope that you and your family are all well. I hope it may not be long before I shall have a chance of visiting again my old home-town. In this event, I shall hope to have the pleasure of seeing you again and of recounting some of the experiences of past years.
[handwritten] Again with my warmest wishes, and all kind remembrances. [end handwritten]
Yours sincerely,
