William Lyon Mackenzie King (December 17, 1874 – July 22, 1950) was the longest serving prime minister in Canadian history, serving in 1921–1926, 1926–1930, and 1935–1948. King was born in Berlin (now Kitchener), Ontario to John King and Isabella Grace Mackenzie. His maternal grandfather was William Lyon Mackenzie, first mayor of Toronto and leader of the Upper Canada Rebellion in 1837. King completed public and high school in Kitchener before attending the University of Toronto where he earned a BA, MA, and LLB. He continued his studies at Harvard University, where he earned an MA and a PhD. King was first elected to Parliament in a 1908 by-election, and re-elected in the 1909 by-election. He was appointmented Canada's first Minister of Labour. In 1919 he became Leader of the Liberal Pary. King retired in 1948, and died in 1950.
