THE CANADA LUTHERAN. 9 the Church Council at its monthly meeting appropriated sufficient to meet all the monies apportioned by Synod and by the General Council for the Synodical year ending May, 1917. Khaki Sunday was observed by the congregation in conjunction with all the churches in the 4th Military District on Sunday evening, Jan. 7th, when Sergt. D. B. Bailly, a member of the church, made an interesting address. The Ladies' Aid and Missionary Society received two new members at its monthly meeting on Jan. 3rd, and discussed the topic for the month, Mrs. H. Bjorklund leading. Mrs. E. Grannery was appointed Literature Secretary. It was decided to conduct a mission study class during Lent and to introduce mite boxes for collecting the semi-annual interest money. The Ladies are paying for the cleaning of the church. Monies were appropriated to foreign missions and to Porto Rico. Sunday, Jan. 14th was an interesting day for the congregation. Six persons were received as members by confirmation: Helen Casselman, Martha Christoffersen, William Sorrensen, Carl Tannersen, Mrs. Herbert McTavish Jundi and Mr. A. W. Parle. Seven persons were also received by letter being Mrs. A. W. Parle, Herbert Jundi, Emma Matson, Ida and Emma Pasch, Ida Holm, Malinda Sell. Sherwood. On Dec. 23 the annual Christmas tree service was held in the church. A sacred programme was rendered by the school to a large and appreciative audience. On Jan. 5 a social was given in the Sunday school room in honour of Mr. Seymour Cooper who has entered Waterloo Seminary to prepare for the ministry. About 100 people were present and an interesting programme was rendered. Mr. Cooper was presented with a beautiful writing desk as a token of appreciation for long and faithful services in the congregation and as a mark of good will. A number of happy addresses were given by representative members of the congregation. On Jan. 23 the annual congregational meeting was held. Most encouraging reports were given and the following officers elected: Elder, Jesse Keffer; Deacons, John Fenwick and Chas. Line; Trustee, David Julian; Treasurer, David Snider; Secretary, Eli Lahmer. Stratford. The annual vestry meeting of Zion Lutheran Church was held on Jan. 8. Encouraging reports were presented. The pastor reported about his work during the year 1916, stating that the work had been faithfully done by him and all church officials and that the blessing of the Lord had been with them. The congregation has made good progress during the last year and all branches of the church are in excellent condition. The pastor's report showed that 111 services had been held and the Holy Sacrament of the Altar administered six times. All services had been well attended, even during the very hot summer months and the number of those taking part in Holy Communion has increased. About 1,200 ministerial calls had been made. The number of sick calls was very large. Number of baptisms 21, confirmed 22, married 11, funerals 7 adults and 2 children, 24 new families are attending our services and their children have become pupils of our Sunday school. The latter is in a flourishing condition. 21 teachers instructed our children, who number about 239, including the cradle roll. The receipts and expenditures of the Sunday school as reported by the S. S. Treasurer at the teachers' annual meeting of January 4th amounted to $221.53 and $177.01 respectively. A balance of $70.02 was carried over into the New Year. The report of the Ladies' Aid Society was also presented to the congregation showing, that this active Society's receipts amounted to $477.00. The mortgage on the parsonage has been greatly reduced, being only $699 at present, all repairs, taxes, etc., paid. The annual meeting of this Society took place on Jan. 3rd. The names of its officers are Mrs. (Rev.) Klaehn, Hon. Pres.; Mrs. J. W. Wettlaufer, Pres.; Mrs. H. Riehl, Vice-Pres.; Mrs. J. Beutenmiller, Sec; Mrs. M. Behrenwaldt, Treas. Mr. Hy. Pauli. The treasurer of the congregation followed the pastor with his report. He reported that the receipts amounted to $1,958.01. The expenditures were $1,956.15. The books were audited by Messrs. Geo. Zinn and W. Soeder. When the books were closed, they found that from $200 to $300 were still standing out, but that since then more than $70 had been paid into the treasury.
