Notes
Carroll Herman Little (1872-1958) was a Lutheran pastor, and a professor and administrator at the Evangelical Lutheran Seminary of Canada (later Waterloo Lutheran Seminary; now Martin Luther University College) in Waterloo, Ontario.

Little was born in Hickory, North Carolina in 1872. He was the eldest of ten children born to Rev. Marcus Lafayette Little (1848-1891) and Candace Mary Almetta Herman (1848-1947). Marcus L. Little, a Lutheran pastor and educator, was killed in a train accident in Newton, North Carolina on February 16, 1891.

C. H. Little received his early education and work experience in North Carolina, graduating from Gaston College in 1889. From 1888-1891 Little worked as editor of a newspaper founded by his father in Dallas, North Carolina. He also taught in North Carolina schools. After his father’s death, Little entered Roanoke College in Virginia, graduating with a BA (Classics) in 1893. From 1897-1898 he was enrolled in post-graduate studies in the Classics Department at John Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland.

In 1901 Little graduated from Mount Airy Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Following in his father’s footsteps, C. H. Little was ordained by the Ministerium of Pennsylvania on June 3, 1901. After ordination he accepted a call to the Nova Scotia Synod, serving as pastor in the New Germany parish from 1901-1909, and the Mahone Bay parish from 1909-1911. From 1911-1914 he was housefather of Bethany Orphans’ Home in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia. During this time he also served the Nova Scotia Synod as secretary (1904-1909), president (1911-1914) and editor of the Nova Scotia Lutheran (1907-1911). In 1914 Little was recognized with an honorary Doctor of Divinity from Lenoir Rhyne College in Hickory, North Carolina. Little left Nova Scotia in 1914 when he accepted a call to the St. Lawrence Parish in Morrisburg, Ontario.

In 1917 C. H. Little accepted a teaching position at the Evangelical Lutheran Seminary of Canada (now Waterloo Lutheran Seminary) in Waterloo, Ontario. He remained at the Seminary for the rest of his career, retiring in 1947. In addition to his responsibilities as professor, Little also held various administrative roles including acting President, 1918-1920, 1929-1931, and 1942-44; Bursar, 1918-1933; and Dean, 1920-1927. Little continued to pursue his own education through correspondence studies with the Chicago Lutheran Seminary, receiving the degrees of BD and STM in 1924, and an STD in 1928.

Publications authored by C. H. Little include New Testament handbook (1941); Lutheran confessional theology: a presentation of the doctrines of the Augsburg Confession and the Formula of concord (1943); and Explanation of the book of Revelation (1950). He was a long time contributor to the Canada Lutheran, and held editorial positions for the publication.

Little married Edith Blanche “Bonnie” DeLong (1888-1974) on September 9, 1908 in Nova Scotia. They had ten children: Carolus DeLong, Herman Luther, Marion, Arthur Bernard, Robert Paul, Margaret Eileen, Ruth, Catharine, Florence Josephine, and John Frederick.

Carroll Herman Little died in Waterloo, Ontario on March 31, 1958.

{Waterloo College} 177 Albert St.,

Waterloo, Ont.

April 8th ’28.

Dear Mother,

I am just wondering what sort of Easter weather you are having. For the past two weeks we have had such warm sunny days, and even last night at bedtime it was mild and showery, so you can imagine our surprise this morning to find winter had returned. The change was so sudden and it is so very cold and blustery with heavy snow squalls. I fancy a good many Easter bonnets were packed away for safe keeping. Perhaps it is just as well. It doesn’t seem right to make a dress parade of Easter. Yesterday when Carroll left for Unionville he didn’t want to take his heavy overcoat, but finally listened to me and carried it over his arm. I am sure he is glad of it today. You know he has been going swimming the last week – was ice the pond at least three times – I am so afraid he will take pneumonia or something equally as bad. He assures me he “knows

what he is doing” and he probably does, for he has hardened himself by cold tub baths daily to say nothing of going bare headed and minus an overcoat – not only back and forth to the Seminary but down town – that he never has a cold. He looks well – and younger than ever – but works hard. He is out preaching nearly every Sunday and feels tired and played out on Monday.

Florence is having her afternoon nap. She is getting to be quite a girl. I have so much trouble with her food. She dislikes so many things. We [?] coax her to take porridge – either meal or Cream of Wheat, and she won’t drink milk. When I spoke to the doctor about it he advised giving her cod liver oil twice a day. I suppose this takes the place of milk. She loves butter, orange juice and potatoes (baked) but we can’t raise her on potatoes and orange juice alone; I certainly am puzzled at times what to give her.

Carolus is busy this afternoon enlarging pictures. You know he has fixed up his clothes closet as a work room and everything is so convenient, He loves to work away at his pictures with no one to bother him. Just lately he bought an expensive camera – some special model – also an automatic printing machine. I am much better pleased when he spends his money in this way than on the girls. Herman was in bed with an attack of tonsillitis for several days last week. He is feeling good again, but will likely have the tonsil operation this summer.

I am going to enclose one of Arthurs pictures – taken last Sunday – Confirmation day. It is very good of him, considering how he dislikes having snaps taken. Am also putting in a cake recipe sent me by my grandmother. I have made it a number of times and think it delicious. Perhaps it is old to you – but

(Page 4)

I had never tried it before. Yesterday I made one for some of the students who couldn’t get home for the holidays. They said it was a real treat to them. I am so glad you are going to visit us this summer - and to come by [?] ! I know it will be a wonderful trip - I only hope the weather is warmer and sunny, for I know you were perfectly miserable the last time you were here. I was cold myself and am today, for the storm is still raging, and I am wondering if I must dig out my galoshes again.

The children are almost counting the days until July - when they will see you. I think we’ll have a jolly time. Meda too, is coming this summer, and I hope she can arrange to be here when you are with us. Now I must close. With love and best Easter wishes for all.

Sincerely,

[signed] Bonnie
