ENGLAND 14 ST. PETERS SQUARE MANCHESTER CABLE ADDRESS "GRENSHIELD" Greenshields Limited Dry Goods Wholesale VICTORIA SQUARE AND CRAIG ST. Montreal Ottawa Oct. 28. 17. Right Hon. Sir Wilfred Lawrier [ Wilfrid Laurier ] Ottawa. Ontario. My Dear Sir:- I am taking the great liberty of addressing you. A general election is impending. As a loyal British subject, I want The Liberal party returned. I have nothing to ask of the party. The Liberal party can be the Real Win the War party without conscription, which is unnecessary, The Liberal party can be the real Democratic party, for which the people are crying. The Liberal party under your leadership can win this election. The people will overthrow the present Union Government if appealed to properly. The Agriculturists vote can be secured, even with present high prices for farm products, there is great dissatisfaction. Particularly Conscription, inaugurated to carry Ontario and Western Provinces can be most effectively counteracted, without touching the susceptibilities of those opposed thereto. and a feeling among a conciderable [ considerable ] number that Quebec dominates the Liberal policy, can be in the same way so clearly refuted, as to be turned against the Now Sifton Unionists. Undoubtedly you are surfeited with advice, I frequently wonder if in your position you meet people to give a real intelligent interpretation of the feeling of the people, by mingling and general intercourse, and aptitude to discern and convey. To the end that this letter may not be assigned to the waste of paper basket, permit me saying in justification of presuming to suggest advice. In my particular calling I am the largest salaried man in Canada which should suggest this is not the writing of a simple one. When I venture to say frankly, I feel I know ideas that would help win elections for the Liberals, and you Sir Wilfred again Premier, has not been said without thought. I am not at all satisfied with wording of this letter, but I think it carries its intent. With great respect. Yours very truy [?] Urquhart 6 Oakland Avenue Ottawa. Confidential.
