Non-Conference Basketball WLU Golden Hawks vs Windsor Lancers February 14, 1967 Gillespie rejoins basketball Hawks The Waterloo Lutheran University Golden Hawks, defending Ontario Intercollegiate basketball champions, will now have the services of Bill Gillespie. Bill, a 6'2" forward and a senior at Waterloo Lutheran, has joined the Golden Hawks for the remainder of the season. He was one of the starting five on last year's championship team but missed the first part of the season due to health reasons. As a forward Bill is a fine ball handler, has an excellent jump shot and will provide additional leadership on the floor along with forward Glenn Wilkie. The Golden Hawks are presently on top of the O.I.A.A. league with a 5-1 won-lost record, in their drive to the Canadian championships. Two reason that the Hawks are in first place is the presence of two guards on the court. This season the Hawks have two freshmen guards on the starting five players in the person of Sandy Nixon and Bob Bain. In the 16 games played to date (Feb. 9) Sandy has scored 190 points and Bob has hooped 189. Sandy Nixon is a 6', 160 lb. guard from London, Ontario. He played his high school basketball at London Central. In his first year with the Golden Hawks Sandy has scored 62 baskets and has a remarkable 73 % record on the foul line. He has scored on 66 of 91 attempts. Sandy is a fine ball handler and plays well on defense, picking off many intended passes of visiting teams. Another freshman guard is Bob Bain. Playing high school basketball at Stamford Collegiate in Niagara Falls, Bob stands 6'1" and weighs 158 lbs. In 16 games played this season he has scored a total of 79 field goals and 31 of 61 foul-shots for a mid season total of 189 points. Wearing number 4, Bob makes many fine moves near the basket and capitalizes on a good jump shot. Both Sandy and Bob provide steady and reliable play for the Golden Hawks. They both will be back next season. No 3201 For Everything in Stationery from SOCRATES TO SAWCHUK SCHENDEL STATIONERY LTD. 120 King St. North Phone: SH. 3-8248 Waterloo, Ont.
