THE HON. W. ROSS MACDONALD P.C., Q.C., B.A., LL.D. CHANCELLOR WATERLOO LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY The Hon. W. Ross Macdonald has devoted his life to public service. Born in Toronto, he was educated at the Brantford Collegiate Institute, the University of Toronto and Osgoode Hall. After service in World War I he received his legal training and was called to the Ontario bar in 1920. He established his own law firm in Brantford, and was made a King's Counsel in 1934. Senator Macdonald's first ventures into politics were unsuccessful. He contested the Brantford riding for the Liberal party in 1926 and 1930, and won election in 1935. He represented the riding until 1953, when he was named to the Senate. During his Commons career he was twice a Cabinet minister, and was Deputy Speaker and then Speaker of the House from 1949 to 1953. As a Senator he played a central role as leader of the Government, Solicitor General of Canada, and, briefly, as leader of the Opposition. He retired as leader of the Government in the Senate last January. Internationally, Senator Macdonald has represented Canada at the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth in 1953; at the United Nations Assembly in 1960; and the NATO Parliamentary Association in Paris in 1962. In 1963 he visited Trinidad and presented to the University of the West Indies a students' residence "Canada Hall," a gift from the people of Canada. In recognition of his public service, he has been made a member of Her Majesty's Privy Council. Waterloo Lutheran University and McMaster University have conferred on him the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws.
