- Northumberland County was the recruiting area for the 139th Infantry Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF), which was headquartered in Cobourg, Ontario. The battalion began service in Canada on November 19, 1915. This postcard shows the 139th Battalion, led by Sgt. Major Albert E. Hircock (drum major). The battalion sailed overseas to England on September 25, 1916. Upon arrival in England, it was immediately divided and absorbed into the 3rd and 36th reserve battalions. They never served as a single unit.
