- Notes
- See a short letter written by Joseph's grandson Michael Joseph Briere, in fond remembrance of his grandfather.
My grandfather was a very determined man. If he said he would do something, he always did. He loved children and always brightened their day by sending them to the store for ice cream or some sort of candies. I've only seen my grandfather angry one time. He always boiled his wood on the stove in a huge pot, so he could bend it to the shape he needed. One day my cousin and I were sitting in the kitchen watching "Old Joe" boil his wood. We started bugging him about making wood soup. He got so mad that he chased us out of the house, and down Pearson Avenue for the longest time. Thank God we were young, because, even though he was in his sixties at the time, he was still in very good shape.

My grandfather also had a different side to him. Maybe people don't know this, but he was an avid read of anything concerning politics or baseball, especially the "Detroit Tigers". He used to take me out to sit outside on his bench, and tell me stories about the past, and about the stars, and how far in this life I could go, if I would just put my mind to it. He was an inspiration in anyone's life, and I'm sure glad I half, a chance to meet a person like him. He will always be remembered by all.
