- Description
- Black and white photograph of three ladies, posing on C.P.R. railway track near the opening of the tunnel at Jackfish, Ontario. The ladies are identified as: Ann, Liv and Kelly Dahl (left to right). Identification has been provided by the son of Liv Dahl.
It was from this point that the troops had to portage during the winter to reach the next train stop at Red Rock, Ontario in order to aid in the suppression of the Northwest Rebellion led by Louis Riel in the Red River district. Jackfish Bay tunnel was the last to be completed in 1885 by John Ross, a contractor for the C.P.R. Van Horne commented that the area from Jackfish to Nipigon, was an area of "engineering impossibilities". This photo was taken in the early 1900's. The commemorative plaque of the last spike joining the west to the east is located in Noslo, not far from this point.
