In the Cochrane-Superior riding as a whole, the "No" vote squeaked to a 97-vote vic- tory, outpolling the "Yes" side 13,301 to 13,204. According to Elections Canada, turnout in the riding was 64.9 per cent. Locally, the closest race was in Rossport, where the "No" side carried the vote by a rela- tively slim 74 to 41 margin. In Schreiber, the "No" side won much more handily, with 601 people voting "No" com- pared with 232 people support- ing the "Yes" side. And in Terrace Bay, support for the "No" side was just as solid, with 825 people rejecting the Accord, and only 313 peo- ple supporting it. Overall, 72 per cent of vot- ers in Terrace Bay, Schreiber and Rossport voted "No", and 28 per cent voted "Yes". Nationally, the Accord was defeated 55 to 45 per cent. Can support cabinet and residents, says Pouliot by Darren MacDonald Staff Lake Nipigon MPP and Transportation Minister Gilles Pouliot says he has no intention of resigning because of com- ments he made about the province's proposed chlorine discharge legislation. In the Oct. 14 edition of the Marathon Mercury, Pouliot is quoted as saying that "in the final analysis, he will side with the provincial cabinet's deci- sion.on the proposed legisla- tion." In the Oct. 28 edition of the newspaper, a Marathon Town Councillor is quoted as saying that Pouliot should be asked to resign because of those com- ments. "T can tell you right now that it's not going to happen," Pouliot said in an interview last Friday afternoon. He said that although he supports all of the decisions cabinet makes, that doesn't mean he agrees with all of them. "You have to understand what goes on behind closed doors," said Pouliot. "Let me tell you that no one Sets hard- er for this area than I do." _ He said that in some ways, cabinet meeting are similar to council meetings. "In council, a vote on an issue may be four to three," said Pouliot . "So even though all the councillors don't agree, council as a whole supports it. And councillors don't resign just because they lose a vote." He said that as a member of the executive committee, he has an obligation to publically support cabinet or resign. "For example, in the referen- dum, I supported the 'Yes' side, and was a member of the 'Yes' committee," he said. "But I respect the people who voted 'No' even though I disagreed with them. And to my knowl- edge, no one has asked me to resign because my side lost. "Some of the decision (cabi- net) makes, I don't agree with," he said. "But I'm not going to resign because of that."
