Page 13, News, Tuesday, May 5, 1992 New members being sought for Ontario council on women's issues For the first time in its 19- year history, the Ontario Advi- sory Council on Women's Issues is seeking new members through nominations from the public. : "The public nomination pro- cess is a key part of the Coun- cil's new mandate," said Women's Issues Minister Mari- on Boyd. "That mandate, which emphasizes regional outreach and activity, will mean more women participate and more women get heard." A community-oriented man- date, a public nomination pro- cess and a grassroots member- ship are among the leading rec- ommendations heard by the Council during its province- wide consultations with women last fall. These consul- tations were launched to find ways of improving communi- cations between women and the Ontario government. With three members from the northwest, three from the northeast, and two from each of the southwest, central, east and Metro Toronto areas, the membership will reflect Ontario's diversity as widely as possible. Individuals or groups within each region will nominate 14 of the 15 candidates, helping to ensure a representative and locally sensitive council. Only the chair will be selected through the usual appointment process--by the premier in consultation with the Minister. All 15 members are to be given a three-year term and eligibility for one reappoint- ment. Boyd said that having Coun- cil members nominated by and working closely with the women in their region will result in "practical advice from people who have real-life experiences and who know their own issues.
