Health group is seeking tougher anti-smoking laws The National Non-smoking Week Committee - Thunder Bay, a coalition of local health and human services groups and concemed citizens, today sup- ported a province-wide cam- paign entitled "Give Kids a Chance", aimed at preventing the tobacco industry's contin- ued access to the children's market. "More than 13 thousand Ontarians dies each year from tobaccos use," says Dr. David Williams, Medical Officer of Health. "At the Thunder Bay Dis- trict Health Unit, we believe that new and enhanced health promotion strategies are need- ed to meet the needs of the people who have not yet reached effectively by existing programs. "Local health groups can call upon municipal govern- ments to guarantee public health and safety through by- laws that prohibit smoking in all indoor public environments and workplaces. D' Souza said there is at least one reason for separating tobacco industry products from other legal products, and for giving cigarettes special treat- ment: tobacco products are the only products that kill the user when used exactly as the man- ufacturer intends. He also urged citizens in Thunder Bay and area to write their provincial representatives in Parliament to support this campaign.
