A three-ring circus of people and machines erupts in Laura's house. During all of this, a group of rotten kids are holding a meet- ing in the Fletcher house. The house begins to crumble, trap- ping them insider. Joey and a friend tries to save them, but end up getting trapped themselves. Evil lurks everywhere in the house. Around every corner and behind every door are mon- sters, dinosaurs and giant ham- burgers. The only way out is through a glowing doorway. The image of Johnathan Fletcher appears and blames the evil on the dummy who has trapped his soul in the house by making him doubt his powers. Joey must go through the doorway and prove his strength by entering the world beyond, which is like having to slap a grizzly bear to prove you're not afraid of bears. Does Joey do it? Are the kids freed? Who cares! By the time the ending arrives, the story has disinte- grated so completely the only reason you're still watching is the hope of a great, saving fin- ish. Don't bother. No loose ends are connected. This movie proves that a fast beginning and slick special effects don't guarantee a great (or even good) film. Speilberg has nothing to worry about.
