McKay, the relationship between Cana- da and our First Nations is starting all over again, as brothers. Where that relation- ship will lead is not apparent. But it is clearly a new beginning, including a new definition for the role of abo- riginal leaders in imminent constitutional talks. I asked Rae whether the Mt. McKay document means an aboriginal leader would be sit- ting beside him at the next round of constitutional talks. His answer: "Yes. But we're going to have to work that out. I think the native leadership has to work with the federal government, and we all have to work together, in figuring out what the shape of the (constitu- tional) table's going to be. But as far as I'm concerned, we have to work hand in hand with the native leadership in this province to begin to pre- sent that position." "That position", according to what was signed August 6th on Mt. McKay, is that Ontario now formally recognizes something no other govern- 'ment in Canada has - First Nations are Nations. They're part of Canada, but they are Nations, with a capital "N".
