"It's been a great derby," said Bill Collinson, one of the event organizers. "The weather was. great. It brought out a lot of boats and fishermen." The grand champion, win- ner of the $2,000 grand prize was Bill Lucas of Thunder Bay with a Lake Trout weighing 16.1 Ib. Other top winners for Lake Trout were: 2nd - Pat Maley of Thunder Bay - 15.9 lb. 3rd - Yosh Thiebe of Thun- der Bay - 14.8 Ib. 4th - Robert Pidluzny of Ter- race Bay - 14.75 Ib. 5th - Bruce Biloski of Thun- der Bay -= 13.95 lb. 6th - Bill Johnson of Thun- der Bay - 13.6 Ib. 7th - P. Templar of the OPP _ Schreiber Detachment, said not Continued on page two Sir Alexander MacKenzie visits the Rossport Fish Derby The Canadian explorer Sir Alexander MacKenzie and his company of voyageurs was piped to the derby grounds in Rossport on Sunday, July 14. The modern day voyageurs are paddling the routes of MacKenzie and are en route to Winnipeg. The company was in Terrace Bay on Saturday, July 13. See story below and pictures on page 3. Voyageurs invade the Northshore By Rob Cotton The News The canoes slid quietly from the mouth of the Aguasabon River and into the waters of Lake Superior just as the sun topped the hills in the east. This morming, Sunday, July 14, these paddlers, university students and members of an expedition commemorating the journeys of Canadian explorer Sir Alexander MacKenzie, were en route to Rossport, the next stop in their sea to sea expedition. The modern day voyageurs had arrived in Terrace Bay the previous day, after a six hour paddle from Marathon. "Paddling Lake Superior has been an interesting experi- ence," said Jim Smithers, pro- fessor at Lakehead University and leader of the expedition. "We had more fog than I expected - almost every day." The paddlers left Sault Ste. Marie in their 36 foot canoes at 6 a.m. in a very dense fog and "ricocheted along the shoreline for about four hours before the fog lifted, Smithers said.
