When Stephen moves in with Janice Morrison (Marsha Mason), he brings Stella: Starring Bette Midler & Stephen Collins ; Rating : 0 pOOl.......csscccssssceees 10 excellent Bette Midler is best known for her comedy roles such as "Big Business" or "Ruthless People". But she is also a fine dramatic actress as evident in "The Rose". Now she proves her stuff again with "Stella". This is a wonderful, engrossing movie. It begins in 1969 when Stella Clair meets Stephen Dallas (Stephen Collins). She is a barmaid and he is a doctor just into a residency program. She is downtown and he is uptown. Against her better judgment, Stella begins to date Stephen. Eventually she gets pregnant. Stephen offers to marry her, but she knows he really doesn't mean it, so she says no. He offers to help her financially, but she is too independent to take his money. He gets a job offer from a hospital in New York and Stella sends him on his way. Time passes quickly now, but we are offered" momentary glimpses into Stella's life. She has a baby girl that she names Jenny. Stephen sees her for the'first time when she is 3. Jenny is 6 or 7 and having lunch with Stephen in a New York restaurant (he and Stella are sharing cus- tody). Jenny is a little older and enchants her Family reading program set for the fall of this year Jenny to meet her. At first Jenny is very cold to Janice, but in time the two becomes friends. Through Janice and Stephen, Jenny meets Pat Robinson (William McNamara), a nice, clean-cut boy from a good family, who keeps running through Jenny's life now. During spring break, Stella takes Jenny to Florida (with the help of a credit card) to be with Pat and the others. Stella quickly realizes she doesn't fit in with these rich people and she feels that she has shamed Jenny. When they get back, Stella goes to see Janice. After some awkward small talk, Stella asks Janice if she plans to marry Stephen. When Janice says yes, Stella asks her if they can take Jenny. She tells Janice that she has gone as far as she can in raising Jenny. Now Jenny needs to be exposed to the better things in life in order for her to grow to her full potential. Janice understands the sacrifice that Stella is making for Jenny and agrees. Does Jenny leave Stella and go live with her dad?, Do Jenny and Pat get together? What happens to Stella now? Definitely rent this movie and find out. Just be sure to keep a box of kleenex handy. This is a sweet, poignant, heart-tugger which will draw you slowly in and make you care about these people I give Stella a 10. by Rob Cotton The News A new program to assist parents: in giving their-young children skills they will even- tually need in order to read will be available in the Terrace Bay-Schreiber area this fall. Margie Fulton and Kathie Notwell, are the co-ordinators of the Schreiber-Terrace Bay Family Reading Program. The program will be designed to help adults and youngsters work together and appreciate the importance of reading, Notwell said. The aim of the program is to encourage the development of natural language skills using activities that parents and chil- dren can do together, Fulton added. The co-ordinators explained that the program is not going to teach children to read so much as concentrate on devel- oping those skills, such as motor skills and language skills, that are a part of the way we learn. Lordy,Lordy Look Who'd 40! Happy Birthday Andy! "Every child has the right to have these skills developed as much as possible before going to school, " Fulton said. . Although the two co-ordi- nators are still developing the final structure of the program they believe it will be in the form of small group work- shops combining children and parents. Parents would also have time to themselves to learn how they can take advantage of their child's natural curiosi- ty to create learning situations. The program will be con- centrating on children from birth to six years of age. It is a free program, open to every- body, operated under the Schreiber-Terrace Bay Liter- acy Advisory Committee. Regisrtration will take place at the Terrace Bay Fall Fair.
