Photo by Rob Cotton by Rob Cotton The News Ontario Hydro could be hiring up to 300 men and women in the region when construction begins on the proposed transmission line for the Manitoba Interconnection in 1995. "The numbers of workers needed will require the unions to draw on a wide area for tradespeople," said _Roy McKay, supervising project engineer for Ontario Hydro,°*at a public information centre held in Terrace Bay on Monday, Nov. 19. McKay explained that Ontario Hydro has an agreement with the unions on projects like these to hire trades péople through the local unions. The transmission line, part of Ontario Hydro's supply/demand plan, would allow for the transmission of up to 1,000 megawatts. of electricity annually for 22: years beginning in the year 2,000. The proposed transmission line corridor will run from the Manitoba border to Nipigon and then either over to Timmins or down to the Sault Ste. Marie area. It will not be visible from the Terrace Bay and Schreiber area passing well north of the current and visible 230kv line. -- McKay said the clearing of the right of way could begin in the winter of 1994-95 with the Block Parent Program construction actually beginning in the summer of 1995. "What we're proposing to do on this particular transmission line is to use the helicopter construction method as much as possible," McKay said. The towers would be assembled in yards 20 to 30 miles apart. Helicopters would pick up the assembled towers and fly them to the already constructed footings on the transmission line's right of way. McKay said crews would also "be moved in and out of the construction area by helicopter. The construction force grows slowly as the project proceeds, he. explained. _A variety of workers from laborers, groundmen, linemen, equipment operators and mechanics will be needed, he said. e Although most of the construction material needed for the transmission line, such as tower steel and the hardware, is special, McKay said concrete for the footings might be obtained locally as well as other types of material. : "As well, maintenance - of our equipment would require the use of local facilities,"he said. The environmental assessment study for the project will be submitted to the Ontario continued on page 2 New parents on the block by Rob Cotton The News Z A safe refuge for both children and adults when a need arises - that is why .a Block Parent program is being established in Schreiber. It is a very simple concept, a . very efficient concept and'a very -- essential concept. The Block,Parent program can make the community safer for our children, said Ron McBride, program organizer and Schreiber Township councillor. If the children are frightened by dogs, get lost or fall and cut themselves they can go into a Block Parent home for help, McBride explained. "The Block Parent will phone the parents, the police or the ambulance - whatever is necessary," he said.
