Liz Boutilier Broker Provincial grants to counter family violence by Rob Cotton The News The Northshore Family Resource Centre is one of twenty- seven groups across Northwestern Ontario receiving grants, totalling $102, 600, from the Ontario Ministry of Northern Development and Mines. The Northshore Family Resource Centre of Marathon will receive $4,000 for office equipment and furnishings. The Centre provides temporary and safe shelter for women and their children who are victims of domestic violence. It also operates an outreach office in Schreiber that provides counselling and referrals for women who are the victims of violence. The outreach office also acts as a liaison between clients and outside agencies. Women who are in need of shelter are transported from this area to Marathon. "These grants are part of an expanded two-part program by the province," said Shelley Martel, minister of Northern Development, in a press release issued Nov. 13.. "First, we want to drive home the message that wife assault is a serious crime and not just a family matter," she said. "Second, we want to make those services more accessible to families by improving treatment and shelter facilities." ; The money will be used for projects across the province 'ranging from organization workshops, production of audio visual - material ffor staff development and community awareness to acquiring furnishings for the shelters. According to the press release the funding initiatives are designed to encourage participation from organizations in isolated or culturally distinct communities . See related story on page 6 Christmas food hampers to double by Rob Cotton The News Share the Wealth organizers expect the number of people receiving Christmas food hampers this year to nearly double. "We anticipate the number of people to increase from 35 to between 55 and 60," said Carol Cringle, Share the Wealth representative. " 2 The numbers have increased because people in_ the communities who receive a disability or a single mother's allowance were not included in previous years. This year the Ministry of Community and Social Services in Thunder Bay was approached and askéd to write to their clients, advising them that this service is available, Cringle explained. In this way all of the nearly 85 people in the communities who receive some form of social assistance are aware of the program, Last year the group received lists from the townships of Schreiber and Terrace Bay of those people receiving welfare, she said.
