Page 9, News, Tuesday, November 20, 1990 Pet Talk te eowre ees Your pet and winter by Alice Scott Winter is just around the cor- ner, so now is the time to prepare for your pet's needs. The deci- sion to have an indoor dog should be made in September to November. A half and half rou- tine (nights inside and days out- side) is more difficult than a com- plete outdoor or indoor life. Without enough time to develop a good winter coat, your dog can- not cope with the stress of winter temperatures. Young puppies, older dogs, toy breeds or short-coated dogs such as a Doberman - are not suited to be outdoor pets. They should only go out when necessary, to relieve themselves or to the 'Car, when the temperature drops below -10 celsius. Salt, snow and ice can be tough on tender foot pads, so check their feet often. Housing should be given top Women priority when you have an out- door dog. The house should be dry insulated'and of the appropri- ate size. It should be large enough to allow the dog to tum around and stand. If the house is too large, it will cause the dog to lose impor- tant body heat. Use straw or cedar chips to help give your dog an extra factor of insulation, if there is no other type of insulation. Your pet's diet should also be changed during these cold days. If the dog is always outside, it may need 70 to 100 per cent, more nourishment than in the summer, to maintain proper weight. You might want to add warm broth, or hot oatmeal to your dog's food just to give him some- thing extra warm to eat. Try to give your pet a high fat quality food during these months of the Moose Minutes Terrace Bay Chapter #1426 Women of the Moose held their Star Recorder Chapter night meeting on Sunday, November 4, 1990. Unfrozen water is Particularly important at all times, since cold air is very dry and can cause dehydration. Your dog can have a safe and comfortable winter if you give him the proper care.
