Box 610 TERRACE BAY, Ontario = do the talki nthe Northern Insight$= coninue tom paces Statement", or constitution, for itself, which is now being circu- lated for discussion. It's only a draft at this stage, because the Network tries to do everything by consensus, and that's not easy when its membership spreads from White River to the Manitoba border. The draft Mission Statement reads: "The mission of the Northwestern Ontario Economic Development Network is to act collectively, to: -understand and anticipate the future -facilitate constructive change in an ever-changing world -enhance the quality of life in northwestern Ontario" When Bob Michels presented this draft to a recent Network meeting in Dryden, he said it was significant that the words "increasing the municipal assess- ment base" or "job creation" do not appear in the Mission Statement. He said that's because the Network has come to the understanding that the overall quality of northern life - dealing with issues like health care and the environment - is just as important as counting the number of jobs created by economic development initiatives. They're attempting to deal with the whole issue of "sustainable develop- ment" - making sure that any plans we make now for this gen- eration's economic life does not undermine the ability of future generations to also survive. The words "act collectively" are underlined by the Network in their Mission Statement because that's the core of their rationale for existence. The Network assumes that parochialism, or a "my town first" approach to eco- nomic development, is a dead-end street. Instead, the Network believes that anything that enhances the economy of the region also helps each individual town, and that they have greater strength acting as a group than by standing alone, or bickering. That's a new way of thinking. Parochialism is still with us, unfortunately. It can be found in too many town halls and school board offices. The Network has several pro- jects in the works, as a concrete demonstration of its philosophy. To give only one example, it's produced a regional brochure, to be given to potential investors who visit Economic Development offices. 'The brochure has some blank pages. The pages that aren't blank explain the merits and opportunities of investing anywhere in northwestern Ontario. The local community fills the blank pages with infor- mation about that town. So if you pick up one of these brochures in, for example, Fort Frances, you're not only getting information about Fort Frances, you're also On the night of the car accident, Bruce was not expected to live. For- tunately, a specially equipped and staffed trauma unit was ready and standing by at a nearby hospital. This special facility helped Bruce beat the odds and he has returned to-work. The Network is thus only one legacy of Peterson's philosophy. How long that legacy will last depends on the longevity of northerners' willingness to take charge of their own direction. The Northwestern Ontario Economic Development Network has put a slightly different spin on Peterson's philosophy by deciding that the "leadership" has to be a collective or regional one, rather than strictly a local one. That may not be exactly what Peterson had in mind. His critics said the philosophy of leaving it up to us to paddle our own canoe could be a set-up - leaving north- erners open to be played off against each other as we each defined our own local agendas. The Network has thus made a useful addition to Peterson's phi- losophy - by. learning, through experience, that parochialism does not work. Standing togeth- er, we just might have a better chance of coping with the future. All the World's a Circus continued from page 5 been something very Freudian in Canadian's mistrust of sincere and hardworking politicians. We much prefer the swaggering, power-drunk smoothie who slaps us around alot but apologizes dur- ing the next campaign. It's taken generations to come to terms wit' voting for people who won't lie' us. And what's the worst the N.D.P. can do? Drive us head- long into a black hole of econom- ic depression? Hey - we were headed there anyway. As Punch Imlach used to say: "You can lose with anybody - so why should you keep losing with the same guys all the time?" Remember, in the Great Crash of '29 businessmen and stockbro- kers lept to their deaths from office towers on Wall Street. If the N.D.P. cause this to happen to the big boys on Bay Street, we'll be endebted to them forever. Conrad Black, Robert Campeau and the Reichmanns - all bidding for the best ledge - wouldn't that get the re-distribution of wealth in this country off to a flying start? But I still feel bad for Davic Peterson. I refuse to believe tha we used our ballots to humiliat this man as a politician an destroy him as a human being This is wrong. Canadians woul not do such a thing because th guy we really want to humiliat and destroy is in Ottawa. We shot the messenger of ba news and so far Bad News hasn seen fit to call an election him self. The logic was slightly askev I mean ruining Peterson to ge Mulroney is like taking a shot 4 Bush and hitting Dan Quayle. Brian...Brian...the electora lynch mob waits for thee. Now can we please just rela for the time being and get focuse on the pressing international cri sis which escalated to an eve more dangerous level late yeste1 day when Brooke Shield announced she has a boyfriend.
