Wednesday, December 13, 1989 TERRACE BAY/SCHREIBER NEWS Page 11 Deciding if that pet is right for you By Alice Scott Christmas is a popular time of the year for bringing a new pet into your home. How do you pick the perfect pup for your home? First, decide on the size of the dog most suited to your house. How active are you and your family? If you are fairly active, then a sporting, birding or work- jng breed may be the most suit- able dog for you. If you are looking for a less active dog, then a terrier or non- sporting breed may be better for your home. If you decide to purchase a dog, purebred or mutt, then there are a few puppy tests that you can use to pick the right dog. These tests should be used on a puppy that is 5 1/2 to 8 weeks old. Choose the puppies that interest you the most. Separate them from their litter mates. Pick one at a time and bring them into a room that they have never been in before. You should have someone else helping you do these tests. 1, Place the puppy at the end of the room, call the puppy by whatever means you would like to use. If the puppy runs to you immediately then he is a very social puppy. Some may take more coaxing than others. They are more insecure and will need extra praise. 2. Place the puppy gently on his back, hold him in this posi- tion. If the puppy doesn't stop struggling, then he may be to independent for your home. If he calms down after a few seconds, then he is very comfortable and trusts you handling him. 3. Have someone keep the puppy's attention when you are sure he has forgotten about you, band a pot with a spoon. Watch the puppy's reaction. If he is ner- vous, then he will need more reassuring than a puppy who runs to investigate the noise. Remember, don't bring a pet into your home unless you are ready to give your commitment and love to this animal. Royal Canadian Legion Terrace Bay Branch 223 ELECTION OF OFFICERS 1990 A meeting to hold Election of Officers 1990 will be held on DECEMBER 6, 1989 at 8 p.m. in the Legion Hall. The Executive By Winnie Campbell On Sunday, Nov. 19 Holy Angels' CWL sponsored a work- shop. by Miss Beverly Hadland from Toronto. Miss Hadland is the founder of Straight Talk, a counselling ser- vice for youth. She spoke on abortion and other issues. Among the topics discussed was the change in Canadian abor- tion laws. Prior to new legisla- tion, abortions had to be per- formed in a hospital and only after a panel of three doctors had ' decided each case. Now, abortions will be between a doctor and a patient. There will also be no time limit (an abortion can be performed up to the time of labor), and the * 100% poleyester fancy fabric from 10.99 up to 14.98 * Velveteen 11.98 metre * Sequence Velour 29.98 metre * Taffetta 10.99 - 12.99 metre - 100% poleyester NOT ACETATE And many more to choose from! Miss Hadland also discussed some intcresting statistics on the women who get abortions and on organizations involved in family planning counselling. It was pointed out that just addressing the issue of abortion is not adequate. Family planning and a change in lifestyle must also be looked at. Programs that promote chastity among young people are needed to reduce the need for abortions. For the youth that attended the workshop, topics such as peer pressure, the double standard for men and women and reasons for sex only within marriage were introduced. She pointed out that The Sewing Nook A place where shopping is a pleasure. Always with a helpful hint or honest advice in selecting the proper fabric or notion and shade for your new garment. Thank you for your patronage thru the year. Elise Kenny Abortion one topic of discussion the youth today are faced with "choice overload" and that they are just now realizing that they have the choice to wait for sexual contact until they are married. She suggested that young peo- ple consider sex a gift to be given to one's husband/wife on the wed- ding night. One of the interesting observa- tions made about our society today was that abortion is only a symptom of a society that docsn't understand relationships. Miss Hadland was a dynamic speaker and all who attended enjoyed the presentation. Her wit and sharing of personal experi- ences added much to the work- shop.
