Wednesday, May 10, 1989 TERRACE BAY/SCHREIBER NEWS Page 5 Mary's trip to Winnipeg By Mary Hubelit Isn't it strange that some of our most productive decisions are made in a split second? I suppose the adrenaline surge following disturbing news fuses all our doubts and indecisions into one driving thought: I must do it! So it happened that I found myself sitting in the Thunder Bay Airport one afternoon with...but. why don't I let the diary tell the story: "2:10 p.m. Apr. 17, first stage completed; a slow crawl in from Terrace Bay, ticket picked up, lunch over, see N. off on his way back home, and here I sit, in an almost deserted waiting room, quiet enough that one can think. But there's nothing to think about - that has all been done and now it's time to move." "3:05 p.m., Well, here we are in a little-bitty machine with open coat racks like Greyhound, less room between seats than Greyhound I think, and no smok- ing, like Greyhound. But we do have two powerful-looking engines, and wings! THis is Air Canada's connector line, Air Ontario." "3:15, We're off! Taxiing any- way. I'll tell you something, though - if the starboard engine falls off, I'll be the first to know! It's right outside my window. We're up, but so bumpy I thought we were still taxiing; I don't dare look out much yet, but these cookies and orange juice will help, I'm sure." She was scheduled for a cataract operation but apparently there were complications due to her glaucoma condition. She was very nervous - just as I was about flying! Two days later her brother drove us from the hospital to her apartment. I stayed with her a while, made sure her food was handy since her vision was not too good. Then back to my in- law's home and time to face the thought of flying again. So, back to the diary: "12:20 p.m. Winnipeg time, Apr. 21 - asked for a seat behind Mother's Day | DINNER SPECIALS 15:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. | Reservations please. * Shrimps-Scampi Style * Broiled Fillet Mignon * Cog au Vin * Beef Bourguignon 824-2890 Serendipity Gardens Cafe those engines, and got one between two windows - can't see a thing! The 'Born Loser' syn- drome is working again. "12:35, we taxi, then hold, then taxi, then the impatient little best tucks her tail under her, points her nose in the air, and we're off. We are in a south-east wind which chops us around a while. We cross several of the bends in the Red River and can see that it is running free, with lit- tle ice left - no threat of floods this year. I enjoy the delicious cold-plate lunch. Then the passenger in front of me pulls down his blind, puts his scat back in reverse just off the end of my nose, and goes to sleep. The Born Loser is still with me! Flight attendant allows me to change seats so I can look out. "2:30 Thunder Bay time - just twenty minutes out of Thunder Bay now, dropping altitude a little (I can feel it in my ears) and low enough to study the wild chaos of random rock that is the play- ground of North-westers." So what did I learn in those five short days? 'Every day should be a learning experience, "they" tell us). Nothing, really, but I was reminded that there is no place like home.
