Page 9, News, Wednesday, November 16 , 1988 Your safe choice is winterizing the car ere it is, the winter's first snow storm. Wet snow and sleet have visibil- ity down to a few feet and you can't remember where your windshield scraper is. You're on a deserted back road spinning your tires in a giant snow drift -- annoyed with yourself because you haven't had the snow tires put on. Many Canadian drivers each year hope and pretend that, if the signs of coming winter are ignored, it won't turn up. The result is often a potentially dan- gerous situation that could have been avoided with the mini- mum of planning. Remember, it's time to think about winterizing your car before the last leaf has touched the ground. Get a stan- dard tune-up to increase fuel savings and ensure your car will start on cold winter mornings. Check your antifreeze level; make sure it's changed every two years and have your cool- ing system flushed every fall. Have your battery tested and play it safe with a new one if it's getting old. Make sure your brakes are cleaned and adjusted and have your exhaust system checked for carbon mon- oxide leaks. Your windshield wipers should be replaced if they're worn and your washer system should have antifreeze in it as well. To guarantee the best trac- tion on winter roads, make sure your tires are in good condi- tion and use snow tires or chains if you drive in heavy snow areas. Along with your tune-up, upgrading your basic survival kit should be standard proce- dure in the late fall. Flares, spare tire, car jack, first aid kit, quar- ters for phone calls, flashlight, matches and basic tools such as screwdrivers and pliers are basics. For the winter, though, you also need some specific win- ter emergency items: - battery jumper cables - shovel - bag of sand or salt or traction pads - ice scraper and snow brush + towing cable - blanket - long-storing food like peanuts or chocolate - heavy boots, parka, mitts, scarf or hat - plastic garbage bags to screen wind. Taking the time to winter- proof your car can save you miles of worry and inconvenience. Uniroyal Tires and the National Auto League have teamed up this fall in a major promotion-to remind you to "Play it Safe" by planning ahead for potential winter iving emergencies. I believe we must make our decision on the basis of the facts. I want to tell you what Ed Broadbent and the New Democrats know about free trade -- the most important issuc in this campaign. We know Mulroney called free trade a disaster for Canada in 1983, and then made his deal with Ronald Reagan. We know the free trade document is wide open, with no serious limits on American control of our resources, our financial institutions and businesses. We know free trade threatens our medicare system because the U.S. claims it*1e: "se unfair subsidy." We know the Americans called UIC payments to our Atlantic fishermen "an unfair subsidy." We know free trade threatens our environment because the Americans call our pollution controls "a barrier to trade." We know free trade will eliminate government help to the North because regional economic development programmes are another "unfair subsidy." ' We know the Mulroney government has not told us the whole truth. Many, many people -- a clear majority of Canadians --- oppose free trade. John Turner says he's against free trade. But let us consider the facts carefully. He says he's opposed to free trade, but two Liberal premiers, many of his candidates and his big business backers all support Mulroney. And Turner says he's ready to make his own deal* with the Americans. So what is the real Liberal position? Whose side is Turner really on? Remember, Turner is still the Bay Street lawyer who imposed wage controls and gave the corporations tax breaks. Ask yourself, does Turner really represent ordinary working people? I believe there is only one team with the record of commitment to standing up for the interests of ordinary working, tax-paying Canadians. The only team you know is on your side is Ed Broadbent and the New Democrats. New Democrats, the party that created medicare, will never allow our medicare system -- the envy of the world - to be destroyed. New Democrats, the party that brought in the old age pension, will never allow the betrayal of our parents and grandparents. New Democrats, the party that always stands for fairness, will continue to lead the fight for a fair tax system where everyone pays their fair share. Next Monday, I hope you will vote for the candidates who can truly say, "We're on your side." Yours sincerely, FEC. Wool. LEN WOOD, NEW DEMOCRAT, COCHRANE SUPERIOR.
